I note on the Henry Ford Museum website that they are rebuilding Henry's private 4-4-0 to run again. Is this correct? This is the engine that he had heavily modernized in the 1920s, that was later rebuilt to its original appearance. We'd like to know more.<p>Also, a reader sent a photo of a roundhouse being built on the grounds. Is this new construction, or the one that they planned to move from Marshall, Michigan? Last September I was there with my Fairmont motorcar for their railroad days. They did have a 4-4-0 running called the Edison pulling three open coaches. I was told this was Henry's own engine, the only one like it in the world. The round house is new construction. I don't remember how many stalls (12?) but the pits were poured and the turntable was in, then they found out that both were at different levels. The last I heard the table was going to be changed to compensate. <br> dphbhend@bright.net |

The extent of railroad activity at Greenfield Village isn't generally known to railroad-museum fans, but it's impressive. A new brick roundhouse, built to the pattern of the old Marshall, Michigan house is under construction at a cost of about $5 million. It will contain a complete steam-locomotive shop, including a wheel press and a fairly modern driver lathe, and some other, older equipment. A medium-sized 4-4-0 seemed to be receiving inspection and some light work when I last visited their shop. This is not the imitation "4-4-0" that has run at the Village for several years, that was rebuilt from an 0-4-0. Several highly-creditable freight-car restorations have been completed. It is well to remember that some of the best railroad museums aren't railroad museums.<p>Meanwhile, up the road, the architectural firm that designed the Greenfield Village roundhouse has been hired to design a larger (but cheaper) steel version at Owosso, to house Project 1225. Some small or old equipment from the old Ann Arbor shop at Owosso was given or traded to Greenfield Village for use in the new roundhouse at Dearborn.<p>Aarne Frobom<br>Michigan State Trust for Railroad Preservation, Inc.<br>P. I was at the Village last summer when they were pouring the concrete for the turntable pit. The staff there told me that the Village Station was also a stop for the daily Amtrak from Chicago into Detroit and return. Some people will take the train into the museum and back. Parked at the station was Henry Ford's private car "Fairlane". It wasnit open to the publid. Does anyone know if there are any plans to display this piece and allow tours through?<br> JMFouchard@aol.com |

The Henry Ford Museum is negoiating to trade this car to the Illinois Railroad Museum in exchange for a former milk tank car (identical to the one IRM uses as a water car for their steam locomotive). This car some how made it into the ownership of the Illinois Central, and was used by them as a power car, and was painted in the current IC grey and is equipped with roller-bearing trucks. The Greenfield Village also wants IRM to give them a complete RPO, but they have been trouble finding one. In all fairness, I understand that C&NW wood RPO was stripped for parts by another party to equip another C&NW wood car. Plus, it was truly a "jack-up-the-number-and build-a-new-car" projects and had been that way for many years.<br> sbgreig_m1@yahoo.com |
