On the topic of the NCTM's meetup of America 250 units from across the country, along with a few of the older Bicentennial locomotives making the journey, I was surprised to not see a list on this site chronicling the surviving Bicentennial units, whether they're in Bicentennial Condition or not. This, is naturally pretty challenging. Some are still around in museums, some are scrapped, some are on short lines, and some are even seeing some use by class 1's in some form. So, I have taken free time from my life to do just that. The good news is that we have a site chronicling the Bicentennial Units thanks to thedieselshop.com . The bad news, is that this site does not easily list what the disposition of these units are. So, time to do some hard crunching. Here's the site if anybody else is interested in the topic or has more information about potentially existing units (i still have no idea what happened to MKT 200). Going though this, I was surprised to see how much survived, and how each railroad tried to honor the bicentennial. Some really neat schemes, and some really unique locomotives. LOTS of EMD SW and NW switchers, far more than I expected. I will be using Allegedly if definite info is hard to find, and/or photos are not available from the past couple of years, but there was enough info that I could find to suggest that the locomotive is probably still around. Ones that were more definite, I gave a location if possible. https://www.thedieselshop.us/Bicentennial.HTML Alaska RR1510 and 1512: both Preserved at the Verde Canyon RR in Clarkdale, AZ Alcoa Terminal RR 5: Preserved at the New Hope Valley RR in New Hill, NC Alquippa & Southern 1208: allegedly still existing at the Nimishillen & Tuscarawas Railway in Canton, OH, according to a facebook post asking about a different unit from 2025. Apache RR 700, 800, & 900: 800 has been preserved by the Navajo County Historical Society in Holbrook, AZ. 700 and 900 remain as parts units for the Apache Railroad Arkansas Louisiana & Missouri 10-12, & 14: #10 is Preserved at the Mid Continent Railroad Museum in North Freedom, WI. #11 is preserved at the Western Pacific Railroad Museum in Portola, CA, #12 still operates for the Quincy RR in Quincy CA, and #14 allegedly still exists for Respondek Railroad Corporation in Madison, IL as of 2022. Ashley, Drew, and Northern 76: Allegedly exists as RailServe SW1200 1206 in Jonesboro, AR ATSF 5704: Preserved at the Southern California RR Museum in Bicentennial condition In Perris, CA. Some of it's classmates, 5700-5703 were rebuilt as SD45B Units and some Allegedly survive in this condition, but I can't find definite information for any of these units at this time. Belt Railway of Chicago 534: Still operating as BRC 150 B&LE 853: Allegedly still at the South Branch Valley RR based out of Petersburg, WV (home of the Potomac Eagle Scenic RR) BR&W 1554: operable for the Delaware Lackawanna RR in Scranton PA as CNJ 1554. Boston and Maine 200: Allegedly Operable for CPKC as CPKC 2010, only potentially surviving B&M Bicentennial unit. Branford Steam Railroad 7357: Still operable for BSR with the same number. BEDT 25: Preserved in a faux livery as NYC 8625 in Manhattan, NY Buffalo Creek 46: Preserved by the "Flour By Rail Legacy Project" in Buffalo, NY Burlington Northern 1876 & 1976: 1876 Still operated by BNSF as BNSF 1916, 1976 Allegedly still operable as Gardendale RR 9043 in Gardendale, TX. Conemaugh & Black Lick 76: Reverted to Original number 111, operated on the C&BL until being preserved by the WMSR in Cumberland, MD. Conrail (PC) 4800: Preserved at RRMPA in Strasburg, PA Conrail (EL) 3632: Stored as NS 1000, test unit in Altoona, PA Cuyahoga Valley 1284: Operating as HUTX 1284 in Hutchinson, KS. Delaware and Hudson 1976: Operating as Arcade & Attica Railroad 114 in Arcade, NY Detroit, Toledo, and Ironton 1776: Allegedly Still operating as CN 6228 Durham & Southern 2000: Allegedly Still operating as CSX 2556 Elgin, Joliet, & Eastern 668: Allegedly Still operating as CN 668 Genesee & Wyoming 1976: Stored as Central New England 30. Grand Trunk Western 1776: Allegedly Still around as Progress Rail 2253. Illinois Central 1776(1) and 1776(2): Fun fact, the Illinois Central unit infamously involved in the grade crossing accident was NOT destroyed, but rebuilt, and both former units that had the famous eagle scheme survive today: 1776(1) operates today as South Shore Line 1001. 1776(2) operates as CAGY 3595 Island Terminal 603: Allegedly still around as S&I locomotive services 603 in Opelousas​, LA KCS 612 & 642: 612 is Operating as CSX 8872, 642 is still on the roster as KCS 3205 Kentucky & Indiana Terminal: Ended up as Wisconsin Central 1565, sold to LTEX in early 2020's, fate currently unknown (but since there was such recency, i've listed this) Long Island 252: Still operating as PRLX 2270. Milwaukee Road 156: Preserved by the Midwest Overland Rail Preservation Society based in Perry, OK Modesto and Engine Traction 603: Allegedly still operating in as Last Mountain Railway 603 Monongahela Rwy 2002: Allegedly still operating as ASRY 2022 Norfolk and Western 1776: Preserved at VMT in Roanoke, VA Pittsburgh & Lake Erie 1501: Preserved at Age of Steam Roundhouse in Sugarcreek, OH Rock Island 652: Preserved at Manly Junction Railroad Museum in Manly, IA Salt Lake Garfield & Western DS1: Preserved in original condition as NYO&W 105 (had NO idea this locomotive was a bicentennial unit) Seaboard Coast Line 1776: This one doesn't count, but I thought it was a funny story nonetheless. The ORIGINAL SCL 1776 was renumbered to 1813, and is now preserved at the LSRA in North East, PA as CSX 7764. But the actual SCL 1776 painted in red white and blue was the original 1813, and was scrapped in the early 1990's. Strange. South Buffalo 76: Still alive, but in very poor condition as NYLE 76 in Gowanda, NY. Needs plenty of work. Southern 6133, 6141, 6900, 6901, 6913, and 6914: Not conventional Bicentennial locomotives but all had decals applied. 6900 and 6133 are at the NCTM in Spencer, NC. 6141 is preserved as RJ Corman 1941 in Frankfort, KY. 6901 is preserved at the Southeastern Railway Museum in Duluth, GA. 6913 is kept by the Southern Appalachia Railway Museum in Oak Ridge, TN. 6914 is preserved by TVRM in Chattanooga, TN. Southern Pacific 3197 and 6800: 3197 operates as Indiana Harbor Belt 4010, 6800 is preserved as SP 3100 at the Southern California Railway Museum in Perris, CA Union RR 17: Allegedly still operates for the Union Railroad. Same number and all. Western Pacific 1976: Allegedly still operates as HRSX 3002 Yankeetown Dock 1776 and 1976: Both operate for the Squaw Valley Southern RR as their original pre bicentennial numbers: 20, and 21. |

Don't forget North American Rayon fireless 0-6-0 number 1 in Elizabethton, TN. She had a fine bicentennial paint job. Today, she's under cover in her original green, across town. |

Would it be possible to show the 3632 as "Erie Lackawanna, later CR", or something similar? During the months that it was a Bicentennial on the EL, they kept it reasonably clean and shiny. After it was patched to CR 6097, it got crusty-looking pretty quickly. JR |

Ingersoll Rand 91, an early 1926 GE/Alco/IR boxcab switcher. Located at IRM, Union IL this may be the oldest locomotive painted in the 1976 bicentennial craze.

B&LE 853: Allegedly still at the South Branch Valley RR based out of Petersburg, WV (home of the Potomac Eagle Scenic RR) I can verify that what's left of it was in Moorefield two years ago, parked in the dead line by the shops. It's been cannibalized for parts, air compressor, electrical parts and cabinet, etc. but the body is still intact. There's a collection of first-generation EMD's there that are basically parts donors, some a lot worse than 853 Omnitrax is leasing everthing that is still runnable, along with the railroad. |

SF5704 is fully repainted back to its 1976 paint scheme and is operational again. We use it at the SCRM museum to pull our excursion trains. At the moment BNSF has borrowed it to show at the special get-together of bicentennial locomotives in Spencer North Carolina the end of this month.

T&P 610 was recently stripped down to its bicentennial paint scheme at the Texas State Railroad. |
