Philip J. Mulligan, 80, known as “EJ Berry” on this board, passed away on January 10th after a lingering illness. Phil was a long-time member/volunteer with the Electric City Trolley Museum and its predecessor organizations. A US Army veteran, he served in Korea during the mid-1960s and was later employed by the Veterans Administration. He also volunteered to maintain walking trails in Valley Forge National Historical Park. Always loquacious, he was a source of endless knowledge on arcane topics and could be relied upon to have an entertaining story on virtually any subject matter. On a personal level, Phil was a good friend for nearly 60 years and served as a groomsman at my wedding. The celebration of Phil’s life will be on Saturday, February 7th at 10:00 AM followed by the Funeral Mass at 10:30 AM, both at St. Vincent DePaul Church,109 East Price St., Philadelphia. Sorry to hear of the loss of your friend, Larry! I always enjoyed the postings from "EJ Berry" especially related to historical Pennsylvania related railroad topics. RIP |

I’m very sorry to hear of Phil’s passing. FYI his EJ Berry RYPN screen name comes from two tracks within PRR’s ZOO interlocking plant. The “EJ” was the colloquial name for the “Eastbound Jersey” which let freight trains coming off the Harrisburg main wind up on the bridge over the Schuylkill River and head toward Frankford Jct. The track was removed in the 80’s when Conrail shifted all traffic to the former Reading side. The two “Berry” tracks ran directly in front of the tower and allowed trains coming out of Penn Coach or QX yard to head east over the Schuylkill river bridge. It basically paralleled the “River Line” but on the opposite side of the “High Line”. One of the “Berry” tracks was removed during the rationalization of the “ZOO” plant. EBL |
