Seventy years ago today, the iconic Norfolk & Western 611 was forever changed by a devastating wreck, an event that became one of the most dramatic chapters in the locomotive’s storied life.
We were so excited to commemorate this exact anniversary by sharing the full story (the facts, the aftermath, and the lesser-known details) during our 70th Anniversary presentation. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans, and the event has been postponed to February 7th, 2026.
But the story isn’t going anywhere.
We can’t wait to welcome you at the Virginia Museum of Transportation as we dive deep into this pivotal moment in 611’s history and honor the resilience that helped make her the icon she is today.
