MAJOR INCIDENT: A question has been asked at a heritage railway and silence briefly became the dominant sound.
“Does the train have Wi-Fi?” asked a visitor, confidently.
The platform at Bramblewick Vale Heritage Railway reportedly paused in response, with several passengers freezing mid step and one volunteer slowly placing a mug of tea back down.
“I assumed I’d misheard,” said Trevor Hainsworth, 51, station manager. “So I waited to see if anyone else reacted first.”
No one did.
Volunteer Colin Marsh, 64, said the moment lingered.
“It was the kind of silence you normally reserve for funerals or bad announcements,” he said. “Very respectful.”
Ticket clerk Brian Ellis, 67, admitted he checked under the counter.
“Not for Wi-Fi,” he clarified. “Just in case there was space to hide.”
Margaret Cole, 69, platform supervisor, said she briefly considered blowing the whistle.
“Not for a train,” she said. “Just to end the moment.”
Nearby, Ron Baxter, 72, buffet assistant, said he pretended to rearrange biscuits.
“I didn’t want to be involved,” he said. “That felt safest.”
Passengers responded in different ways.
“I stared very hard at the timetable,” said Dorothy Cartwright, 82. “I don’t think it helped.”
“I suddenly became interested in clouds,” said Dennis Hall, 76. “Quite an interesting formation, actually.”
The visitor clarified that they “only wondered.”
“That made it worse,” said Jean Fletcher, 71, volunteer. “Wondering is how things start.”
After a measured pause, Trevor addressed the situation.
“We don’t have Wi-Fi,” he said. “But you can hear the engine from anywhere.”
The visitor thanked him politely.
“That was the bravest part,” said Ron.
The train departed shortly afterwards, the question remaining unresolved but quietly processed.
The incident has since been discussed at committee level, where it was agreed that preventative action was required.
“We can’t go through that again,” Trevor said. “It unsettled people.”
The committee has now approved the installation of a small sign at the station entrance reading:

NO WI-FI
You’ll survive.

“It’s not meant to discourage anyone,” Colin added. “It’s just there to manage expectations.”
The railway has confirmed that while WiFi is unavailable, visitors remain free to stare into the distance, listen to steam and reconsider their priorities.
The sign, the committee agreed, should prevent further incidents.

I don't understand the desire to insult or alienate your visitors with the "You'll survive" line.

I'm curious as to how many Heritage Railroads are located in areas with no cell phone service. That's how I get Internet when I'm out of WiFi range.

Where I live cell phone service is almost everywhere.

So you fail to understand that the post is from a satirical page, that the "Bramblewick Vale Heritage Railway" does not in fact exist, and that the photo is apparently an AI creation????

The Grand Canyon Railway has to no doubt "insult" some of its riders with signs at the ticket windows informing prospective riders "Note: The train does not in fact operate down INTO the Grand Canyon."
