It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that the Virginia Museum of Transportation and the 611 Steam Program have lost a dear friend. Lewis Ingles “Bud” Jeffries passed away on January 20, 2026.

Bud was the author of "N&W: Giant of Steam", a book many consider the “bible” of Norfolk & Western steam. He also served as the Official Historian of Norfolk & Western 611 for the museum and was often alongside us on excursions and events featuring the 611. Bud’s passion for railroad history, especially N&W steam power, was unmatched. Through his presentations, storytelling, and deep knowledge, he helped so many better understand and appreciate the legacy of this locomotive and the people who built, ran, and preserved it.

Beyond his incredible railroad knowledge and dedication, Bud was a retired Colonel in the United States Army with 27 years of service, an extraordinary life of commitment and leadership.

Bud will be greatly missed, but his impact on the 611 community and the preservation world will never be forgotten. Please keep his family and loved ones in your thoughts and prayers.

I knew Bud back in the 1990s when we both served on the Radford, VA Main St committee and were members of the Radford Evening Rotary Club. We both had a fond love of railroads especially steam. My grandfather was an engineer on the CNJ running the famed Camelbacks. Rest well my friend on your trip on the Last Westbound.
