Our group has signs posted to prohibit such actions and have area roped off. Means nothing to these people and they get belligerent with us when we approach and advise them. One parent even said, "we'll just come back when you're not here". |

Meh, too broad, too boilerplate, and the photog looks like a pro who wouldn't be dumb enough to be in the gauge. Instead, say, show that guy in the UK who was almost hit by a goods train he had his back to when waiting for Tornado one track over in the opposite direction. I think something similar happened with the UP Big Boy, if you want a US example. Although neither of those people were technically trespassing. |

We don't have much of a problem with trespassers. On the rare occasions we do get them when no one is around, our security system notifies our CMO and he can watch in real time. As to the poster, I've done these types of posters in the past. You have to remember that the general public knows nothing about real trains so you must have an eye-catching image, dumb down the message and get your point across with as few words as possible (cuz nobody actually reads anymore). So what may be generic to us, is new info to those that don't know (if they read it). My only criticism would less words and larger, bold fonts. I imagine we'll see more railfans than usual this weekend as we're going to run our trains with our just-completed, mechanically restored RSD1. We'll have a clear spot ready specifically for those that want to shoot images. That way we can keep track of them. The turbo lag on that thing is phenomenal - pure Alco. |

This specific poster is NOT targeted at railfans. It's targeted at both the commercial photographers who buy into the photographic cliché of posing people on a railroad track for compositional and/or "symbolic" reasons, and at the people who attempt to copy/emulate such imagery themselves in selfies or posed photos. Those of us who have adopted railroads as either an avocation or a hobby literally have no idea how appallingly ignorant of the actual dangers of the railroading environment the "general public" can be. And it wasn't until increasingly omnipresent video cameras documented the most egregious examples that we saw proof of this ignorance. Those of us who have seen these videos--the woman struck by a BN commuter train and sent flying towards the videographer's tripod; the kid who had to be picked up out of the path of a UP freight crawling towards him because he was engrossed by the Big Boy being taken for overhaul; the woman struck by a speeding UP 844 as she was standing on the crossties to shoot a cell phone video--will never question the need for Operation Lifesaver again. |

The legal and risk environment plays a role. Here in Denmark, we have fairly strong laws about trespassing on railway lines. It is a criminal fine of minimum a few hundred dollars to walk along the railway line. If you get hurt, there is no liability for the railway authority. I have never seen someone walking along the railway line such as one sees in the US. There are clear markings at railway platforms showing the boundary where the public must not cross. At the same time, we have a great problem with grafitti. So there are many people trespassing in railway yards at night. |
