Hi John.

My name is Dow, and I'm a conductor for BNSF out of Seattle. I am also a member of the GNRHS. Anyways..I've recently been tallying up all the remaining wrecking derricks on class 1's, and I have some good news for you....some of them from your previous 2018 lists are still on current rosters and railroad properties.

Here are the ones that I have verified are still on the rosters.

-BN D250, former GN X1743, still on the BNSF roster in February 2021, in Havre, MT. I called and spoke with the car foreman about it. At my urging...D250 may be going to a retirement home on display in town, instead of to the scrapper.

-UP 903045 still on the roster and in Portola, CA, Feb. 2021
-UP 903046 still on the roster and in Cheyenne, WY, Feb. 2021
-UP 903047 still on the roster and in Green River, WY, Feb. 2021
-UP 903050 still on the roster and in Roseville, CA, Feb. 2021

-UP 910006, not on UP roster anymore, but still owned by them. For some reason being stored across from the Roseville yard at the Jim Dobbas Co. facility. She was last used to clean up a commuter wreck in Niles Canyon in 2016.

-UP 903010 SOLD to the Rick Franklin Corp. in Lebanon, OR as the RFRX 1001. Still in operation Feb. 2021.

-DRGW 28 still on the roster and in Grand Junction, CO, Feb. 2021
-DRGW 30 still on the roster and in Denver, CO, Feb. 2021

-MPX 251, still on the roster and in North Little Rock, AR, Feb. 2021...prior Missouri Pacific derrick, now operated by UP.

-TTI #100, prior SLSF/BN "Frisco" 99025, still on the roster and in operation by the TransKentucky Transportation R/R in Paris, KY, Feb. 2021. They use it for lifting locomotives to change out trucks and traction motors.

-MRL D-100256, prior NP #47/BN D256. Still on the roster and in operation out of Missoula, MT, Feb. 2021.

Thats all I have for now. Still working on others. If I find out any other information, I'll let you know.

Dow

What about the 100 ton capacity wrecker, built by Industrial Works at the Nevada Northern Railroad, Ely, Nevada. It is in operation. Or does it not fit your criteria? It is a tourist railroad.

I didn't count the Nevada Northern A because it is in preservation not commercial service.

Are these remaining wreckers held "just in case", or do they have a practical application on a regular basis?

Ja, Tak.

But I understand almost all of this work is now done by contractors like RJ Corman, who use various construction and road cranes. So are these wreckers being held out of extra conservative backup in case the contractors are not available, or some other fear?

The small handful that remain are typically reserved for mountain passes where its not possible to get a contractors equipment, especially in inclement weather.

An American Crane In Poland.

The Towarzystwo Kolei Wielkopolskiej museum in Jarocin, Poland, just announced receiving American Crane 53892. According to the Facebook post, the crane was made in 1942 and they speculate that it may be the only example in Europe.

Ya don't say... Is it possible I just wanted to post it in a place where John T would see it?

The only number I see on it 53892.
