Train 42 was the Pelican, New Orleans-Chattanooga-Wash-NY and heavy with mail and express. Pullmans too. Route was SR-Chattanooga-N&W-Lynchburg-SR-Wash-PRR.

Just for the rivet counters, the recording was actually made Dec 27. Link made a recording at Rural Retreat Dec 25 but didn't like the results, background sounds were too noisy, among other things. He came back Dec 26 and made some of his very famous photos at the station but no recordings. Then on Dec 27 he put it all together and made the iconic recording heard here (Details in N&WHS magazine, The Arrow, V25 #4). I listen to it every year. Thanks for posting.

Mr. Link also had the Church Bell Ringer came back again to repeat her performance in the background.

For anyone new here, all the details are in this thread from 2010:

I was away from the computer for most of the past few days, but figured someone would refresh the original thread last night...................

In addition to the chimes ringing, play it again and listen to the train. It's long and heavy. The J eases the train out of the station, then once the engineer knows he has has a wheel on the train, the 603 shows off its horsepower.

I've always wondered if the head end crew ever knew their train was on this recording.
