Hi All
My friend & I were following the right of way of the Western & Maryland railroad, and we came across this equipment I believe in the town of Lonaconing, Maryland on route 36 east.

So why is the equipment there??? there were two (2) Geeps, assorted freight cars and a caboose, and and Alco Switcher. Is the equipment privately owned, or a short line that did not pan out?????

The equipment seems to be in the middle of nowhere,,any answers out there, and again Thanks , Pat.

Interesting, would you mind giving the number of that black WM geep in the photo? I can't quite make it out, perhaps that would give us more information.

Found out more information. They're part of the now closed George's Creek Railroad, not sure exactly what the deal is with them.

A little bit of both, as the railroad shut down when it's only customer closed. They were collecting legit WM equipment and restoring it.

Arguably the Paducah rebuilds with the ox-yoke and the frogeye lights were "worse".

I came to love them, though, on Midsouth -- the last place I got to hear 5 567s idling together. The functional look grows on you, and for operation you can't fault them.

Just keep telling yourself it doesn't have to be 'stock' and that it's legitimate historic fabric...

Are those vintage two-bay coal hoppers? Are they Western Maryland heritage or.....? Sure hope they go to a railroad museum and don't end up being scrapped.

I believe wm303 (no space) might know a bit about this equipment. From what I understand, the hoppers are original WM cars.

Fun fact, WM GP9 25 (then GRWR 6400) had a cameo as the infamous train that kept waking up Vinny Gambini in My Cousin Vinny (1992).

What model Also switcher? Plain or friction bearings? And who is the actual owner of these units? Hate to see stuff this size, vintage sitting, and I know people that are looking.

They had an S2 and a T6. Both have rollers. The T6 was still at the mill last I heard so that may be the S2 at Luke.

[Edit] confused place names - S2 not at Luke but up towards Barton at the shop.

They also had some S6s, one source has one of the two they bought from the old steam plant in Solvay, NY as still there. If it is, it's buried deep out of sight.

The T6 is at the paper mill in Luke, I believe it's an S6 sitting at the shop area near Barton, MD. The shop location is where the GP's and other equipment sits, this is the same site that the WM FA #303 departed from a couple of weeks ago. Most of the equipment is owned by the Georges Creek Railway. Some pieces are privately owned.

As said earlier member WM303 is one / was one of the principal owners of the GCK. The man had a lot of good ideas and plans but that all changed when Verso closed the paper mill.
