Hi all, I am working with a project where we are going to install a generator under a passenger car. This was manufactured by Eastern Rail of Hillside NJ. It is powered by a Cummins Diesel. Generator data plate is gone. But the Cummins plate is still attached. Horsepower Rating is 97. Model Name is 6B-5.9. It is a 359 CID, 5.9 L Series B. CPL 0597. Anyone have a manual for this machine? Thanks, Dale Grice |

The engine looks like it is a standard Cummins 6b natural aspirated. More than likely a 12 valve with a Bosch P pump. There are many sources for service info and cummins can still get manuals for them. The generator and control system you would have to go back to the manufacturer. |

As said above, individual manuals may be your best chance. The engine will have a couple, and the control panel will have one or two as well. (picture of the controls may help). The generator end itself should have a data tag on it, which may or may NOT be the KW rating of the set, as it is common to upsize the alternator slightly, which helps it last longer. Your ultimate power available, at most, will then be what the engine can do before it starts loosing speed. Your HP is listed as 97, but at what RPM? Your engine almost certainly is governed to 1800 RPM, which is a bit too slow to get the most power out of modern diesels. If it's a purpose built generator engine, it may be rated at 1800, but if it's a general purpose engine, the horsepower is peak at whatever RPM it occurs at, which is useless in a generator. My best guess is 45kw, especially if it lacks a turbocharger. |
