Post subject:  McHugh Locomotive Shop Update

The shop and service departments at McHugh Locomotive & Equipment continue to be very busy. We have several heritage railroad and short line restorations projects happening at the McHugh shop including H.K. Porter 1913 built steam locomotive No. 6 for private owner Sammy King.

Our shop has also performed some small repair projects for various heritage railroads, a few items are: rebuilding old EMD SW-9 locomotive fan assemblies, providing new gears for GE locomotive axle sets, and new gears for a Whitcomb locomotive.

We are currently finishing the rebuild of 8 EMD D-77 traction motors for various customers. We will install 4 of those D-77 traction motors into two rebuilt EMD switcher truck assemblies that have reconditioned axle sets with new wheels that we have sold to a short line railroad on a unit exchange basis. The other 4 units will be ready for our in-stock product so when a customer has an emergency we can provide a unit ASAP to get them back in service.

We have also completed reconditioning 4 EMD axle sets with new wheels that have Hyatt roller bearings. These units will be shipped by a McHugh tractor trailer to a location in NY and our service crew will change out the worn out axle assemblies on a EMD MP1500 locomotive at a customer’s location.

Our on-site service department has been busy with providing change outs of traction motors and axle sets at short line and regional railroads on various 4 and 6 axle locomotives.

If your heritage railroad or museum has a diesel locomotive that requires repairs to traction motors, gearboxes, or axle assemblies, McHugh can safely provide this service at your location. We stock 4 EMD axle sets with new wheels that have AP class F roller bearings and stock 4 EMD axle sets that have new wheels with Hyatt roller bearings. We also are one of the few locomotive rebuilders in the USA that stocks a wide variety of GE 25-ton to 80-ton locomotive parts, components, and truck assemblies.

Keep a look out for our full page heritage railway advertisement on the rear cover of the September issue of Railfan & Railroad magazine. We will also have a full page advertisement inside the front page in the special locomotive edition of Trains Magazine that will be at newsstands in September,

Does McHugh rebuild traction motors in-house?

BTW I spotted an old McHugh dump car on the LBR at Croghan NY last week.

That could have been NHIR 389, which McHugh sold in the late 1980s. I think they bought it from Sam Freeman.
