Today we welcomed a new addition to our collection! Southern Pacific #2479 was set on our rails and moved safely to our Brightside yard late this afternoon as seen here rolling along Highway 84 just west of Sunol. The boiler and frame were moved separately, which I think explains why the cab is missing. Bottom photo Ken Middlebrook. NCRy also has received an 80' turntable bridge this week for eventual use in Niles with their repurposed SP engine house.

This is really good news. I was wondering how long this move would take.

It has been a busy week of large cranes and trucks to facilitate the 30 mile move from the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds to Niles Canyon. A great team of contractors and volunteers executing to plan.

I have a question the SP #2467 is on long term loan to the California State Railroad Museum so with 2479 at Niles Canyon, CSRM get 2467 permanently???

I don't think Nikes Canyon Ry. sees any reason to change 2467's status, from two comments on facebook:

At the time, a long term loan of 2467 to the CSRM made the most sense for both groups to best preserve the engine, and that decision continues to be a good one. 2467 continues to allow both groups to fulfill their missions of preserving railroad history and sharing it with the public.... 2467 is safe where it is and is continuing to fulfill our mission along with CSRM's mission. People can see it and learn from it. 2479 is a similar engine, yet comes to us with a very different set of circumstances that made having it in the canyon make sense to continue its preservation that has been worked on for decades as well. Thus it is now on our property where 2467 is not. Again, each one is considered individually and in the end, both remain safe and in good hands."

Can you tell us where the 80 foot turntable came from, and if it has a builder's plate, who built it and when.

"Niles Canyon Railway August 25
So today we moved a bridge over a bridge! Well, we moved a turntable bridge over our Farwell Bridge as it was moved from being offloaded by crane from its truck east of Sunol to Niles where the crane offloaded it for storage in the Niles yard where someday we hope to install it so it can again feel the weight of locomotives. Truck access to our Niles yard is limited so it necessitated this two step move to the final storage location. This is the SP San Jose Lenzen Roundhouse turntable which along with SP #2479 and the saved saw materials from the roundhouse have been transferred into our stewardship. We are pleased to have this great new piece of Bay Area railroad history, and we hope to have details soon on how you can help support the reconstruction of the roundhouse in Niles and the install of its turntable as well."

The bridge was built by the American Bridge Company and is identical to the bridge outside CSRM - several years, the CSRM folks looked at ours when they did some repairs to their own. The builders plate is long gone- having been removed prior to its leaving of the Lenzen site. I don’t recall the construction date.

Originally the bridge was installed in Tucson before its installation in San Jose around 1937-38.

FYI, it’s stripped down weight is 65k.

The largest gratitude should be given to the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors, the prior owner of the locomotive since 1958. CTRC only held a lease on the locomotive for the past 35 years. Not only did the County Board relinquish title of the locomotive to the PLA, they provided the funding to move it and the roundhouse components off the fairgrounds. Without those actions, particularly the funding, this transaction toward the locomotive and San Jose Roundhouse’s long term preservation would not have occurred.
