Two ex Great Northern passenger cars are free if you can haul them. Apparently they are leaning on the depot in Pullman, Washington. More info can be found at these two sites...

They have been trying to get rid of those cars for a long while. Except for the couplers and "some other things" they are pretty much junk, not to mention ugly with those inappropriate windows- even the trucks appear to have been cannibalized.

They have been trying to get rid of them a long time, as mentioned above. They appear to be increasing the efforts, the cars are now on Craigslist.

Not sure why they'd want the couplers, or what "other items" are not included.

At least one set of couplers/draft gear are spoken for if the cars are scrapped, along with a few other other miscellaneous parts, but they aren't a good source for much else, e.g. the trucks and wheel sets are apparently mismatched. When the cars were prepared for static display much was discarded, neither have brake valves, and all of the windows were replaced with vinyl house windows.

Even if they are "sold", they reserve some parts. Quoting the CL ad: "Couplers and a few other parts excluded."

Guess it's almost like the old HO kits "Less (correct) trucks and couplers"

Surprisingly both cars were saved. They are both going into private ownership. One is going to Colfax, WA and the other is going to Moscow, ID.

Scrapping wouldn’t have made any sense anyways-not with the price of scrap steel being practically nothing. They’d have had to pay a scrapper to take them. Unless someone is really desperate to get rid of a piece, they’re not going to pay a scrapper to take a car or locomotive.

Ironic the newspaper article complains about them blocking views of the station.

As if the station was built for some other purpose!

I was surprised to see this post in my facebook feed, they still have the cars apparently, and are building a shelter: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid ... 868&type=3

Rolling Stock Restoration update
Work on the train cars have come to a halt until next spring. The cars have been covered and protected for the winter, while plans for the completion of the renovation continue.
Existing vinyl-framed windows – inappropriate for the 1946 passenger car – will be replaced with aluminum-framed tempered glass windows with radius corners, restoring the original streamlined look. We’re offering a limited opportunity to sponsor each of the 36 passenger car windows for a gift of $1,000.
We are extremely grateful for the outpouring of community support this project has received so far, and for grants received from the Port of Whitman County ($35,000), the National Railway Historical Society ($5,000), Amherst Rail Society ($1,000) and Avista Foundation ($5,000). We are currently about $25,000 shy of the goal of covering the project’s total cost of $225,000.
Please join us as we restore the rolling stock along with the Depot! You can make a difference by sending a donation to:
WCHS - Pullman Depot - Rolling Stock Restoration
PO Box 67
Colfax, WA 99111
Donations are essential and can be made here.
(Be sure to mention the Rolling Stock project on your check memo line or click on “Ken Vogel Rolling Stock Project” when donating online!)
