While developing a history of the railroad museum at Corinne, Utah, I just came this newspaper article and photo of a wooden business car being donated to the museum. It was a 51-foot wooden car used by D. C. Jackling for him to travel around the Bingham Utah copper mine. Jackling had a much larger steel car named Cyprus that he used to travel outside of the copper mine. The article was in the May 7, 1962 issue of the Salt Lake Tribune newspaper. I am wondering what happened to the car after the collection was moved to Heber in 1979-1980. Here is what I have so far for the Corinne museum. http://utahrails.net/utahrails/corinne-museum.php Don Strack

This research was started when I received two photos of the UP cars that were part of the original Corinne collection, both taken by Dave England in mid 1959. One photo shows the OSL Baggage Postal 2314, and the other, UP Chair 414. Don Strack

Could this be the car that Sumpter Valley obtained about 11 or so years ago that it lists as being ex-Bingham & Garfield - Kennecott Copper Co business car? This is a car that is small by standard gauge "standards", but large by narrow gauge "standards." I'm not sure where they obtained the car from, but I think it was Utah. |

I believe this is a picture of it from the early '80s from my personal collection.

The other two passengers cars mentioned, a Harriman RPO No 2314 and Chair car No 414, along with UP (6)264, a Harriman standard 2-8-0 are at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Boulder City NV. The 264 and RPO 2314 are on public display under our pavilion, while chair car 414 is at our shop being evaluated for rehabilitation and possible operation. Thanks Randy. I was hoping for a confirmation that UP 414 is at Boulder City. Don Strack |

Coach/Chair car 414 is a special survival... In a world where coaches don't survive, 414 did... a c.1922 common standard coach seating near 80, rebuilt in 1936 as a chair car with modern seating, light and luggage racks and air conditioning, today she is the 1936 car plus an extra heater... and otherwise undisturbed. We are planning a rehabilitation, which will include a new a/c unit (existing ducts) powered by HEP, upgraded brakes, preserving the wood sash windows, carbody and interior, most likely in two tone grey, with UP lettering as a c.1950 deluxe coach. As such it will be both a historic car for display and an additional car for the excursion train. The RPO is under our train shed, with the postal compartment restored and open to the public... the carbody is in decent paint but in poor condition... but under cover leaks are not an issue. Randy |
