| Post subject: | ASR - Reading T-1 2100 Roundhouse Report for Feb. 27, 2016 | ||||
This past weekend ASR had another productive work session at the Midwest roundhouse in Cleveland. The following volunteers, in no particular order, attended Saturday’s work session: Rick Owings, Jake Crayton, Chris Howell, Greg Brown, Brian Tusin, Eric Kapusta, Gordon Hartschuh, Forrest Nace, Tiffany Saultz, Rob Gardner, Steven Harvey, Matt Ash, Stephanie Bierley, Kevin Anderson, Joseph Brown, Ben Anderson, Jason Sobczynski and Tim Botti. This week was by far our best turnout of volunteers with 18 hard-working folks having showed up to complete a couple of key tasks. New volunteers this week included Kevin Anderson, Ben Anderson and Joseph Brown from the Springfield, OH area. Volunteers are traveling nearly 4 hours to volunteer on the 2100. Work Report Stephanie Bierley, Eric Kapusta and Matt Ash completed wire-wheeling the interior of the firebox including cleaning up the rear tube sheet. They finished this task by washing down the side sheets and siphons with rubbing alcohol. Congrats to you three and Perry for being so faithful to take on the very dirty task of working inside the firebox in a difficult environment! Jake Crayton, Chris Howell, Tiffany Saultz, Kevin Anderson, Forrest Nace and Rob Gardner brushed and rolled on the rust converting primer over the firebox and boiler shell, smoke box and cylinders. This primer will help provide a smoother, sealed surface to ward off additional oxidation to the boiler shell and also help pull rust from the steel boiler shell for future removal prior to application of heat resistant primer and paint. The primer went on with a noticeable blue tint, but dried fairly clear. And, no, we are not going for that “Thomas” look, lol. Brian Tusin, ASR machinist, completed 25 more Teflon gaskets for the washout plugs. Gordon Hartschuh, Chris Howell and Greg Brown worked on lapping washout plug seats on the backhead inside the cab. Jason Sobczynski and Tim Botti analyzed extremely pitted washout plug seats and marked them with red paint for truing with the Mill Hog. Rob Gardner and Jason Sobczynski assembled an initial list of material costs for the first round of grant applications. Upcoming Work Session Tasks: The following tasks are planned for the upcoming work sessions in March including: • Remove historically inaccurate red 3M adhesive reflective material from side skirts and white “2100” numbers from both sides of the cab. • Lay out grid lines for the UT test of the firebox. • Take UT readings and record for analysis. • Finish machining the remaining washout plug gaskets • Machine two (2) more lapping tools for the medium sized gaskets • NOTE: Contractor Jason Sobczynski has secured the use of a portable "Mill Hog" that mounts to the interior of the washout plugs and will allow us to cut new gaskets seats on the worst of the badly pitted gasket seats saving many man-hours that would otherwise take week to complete by hand. Approximately 12 of the washout plug seats will have new seats cut in this manner. • Continue lapping the medium size washout plug gasket seats • Reinstall washout plugs with new gaskets • Complete an initial air test and fix all detected leaks • Complete a hydrostatic test and fix all detected leaks Upcoming Events: • The first ASR safety training class will be held on Saturday, March 5, at the Marion Railroad Club in downtown Marion, OH. • The next work session is Saturday, March 12, 2016 and starts at 9 am. We will have work sessions every weekend in March and April starting with the March 12 work session. • Don’t forget to sign up for the volunteer emails at the fireup2100.org website so you can get regular email updates. • Don’t forget to come ready to sign and complete a volunteer waiver and if you are not a member already, come prepared to fill out a membership form and be able to pay your membership dues at that time. Respectfully submitted, Rob Gardner Fireup2100.org Fundraising Chairman
