Our support group, "The Friend's of the Valley Railroad", is back working on finishing the restoration of their 0-6-0T, former Simons Steel No.2 from the Steamtown collection.
Right now, the cab interior is the focus of their efforts.
When they purchased the locomotive, it was dismantled, missing (even in Steamtown days) most of the cab hardware. Over the years they have acquired injectors, hydrostatic lubricator, water glass and other cab fittings. Recently they have made and installed all new windows and doors.
The prior owner (City of Peabody, MA), had done a lot of steel replacement. Unfortunately, none of the holes where (for instance) the water lines to and from the injectors went through the cab floor, etc. were made, so there is a lot of missing information.
Does anyone out there have any decent cab interior photos, drawings or sketches to share which might help with their restoration?

Most steam locomotive cabs could be kind of generic. You had a steam gauge mounted in a prominent spot, a steam turret or manifold to whatever auxiliaries you had (injectors, air compressor, the lubricator, turbogenerator--if the locomotive even had all of these), plus the throttle, reverse lever or Johnson bar, air brake handles and associated piping (if the engine had air, some industrial engines didn't), sanding controls (either air or mechanical), and maybe some other things if we would be talking about a large road locomotive, like controls for a stoker.

I would try to visit some of the operational locomotives in your area, or do an internet search for "steam locomotive cab interiors." That should provide you with guidelines for what you want to do. One thing that might help is that unlike automobiles, a lot of times things could and did get rearranged or modified by the repair shop over time.

The main thing is to put things where the appropriate crewman (engineer or fireman) would use them and plumb or wire them appropriately.

And you don't have to worry too much like the neophyte fireman who had some questions about train air and straight air. In the time period involved, train air was for the train, and straight air was for the locomotive only. He was puzzled how the straight air went through a crooked pipe--which was bent all around to get where it had to go, of course.

I think J David has access to more than a few steam engine cabs. He's looking for some pretty specific mounting ideas.

I know its an 0-4-0, but St Elizabeth's #4 at the B&O is a Porter saddletanker. Here's some pictures that I happen to have in my files. I can try to get some more next time I'm up at the shop. George could probably get you some as well (I'm pretty sure you know how to get in contact with him, if not let me know). Hope these are somewhat helpful.

Many thanks from the Colfax railroad museum. This post also helped us to figure out what we're missing for Coronet Phosphate #5, our Porter 2-6-2T. Sadly, it's just about everything. At least now, the hunt can begin and we have a good idea where it goes when we find it!

Is that a key lock on the quadrant of the throttle? Was that a common way to secure a small steam locomotive?

It is a lock. I'm not sure if it was common, but it's what we do.

We used to lock the throttle and chain the Johnson bar to dead center when we were putting the locomotives to bed on the CP&LE

The only thing I have to offer is a photo of an H. K. Porter gauge. I do not know if this is the one that would have been used in an 0-6-0T.

The Canada Museum of Science and Technology has the Porter technical designs and specification order books in their collection, they have been helping guys around the world restoring Porter Locos.
