Since we are in the new year I thought that it would be fitting to start a thread on what steam do we expect to see running or at least under steam this year?

New Hope Valley 17 will be running as the only steam locomotive regularly scheduled in both Carolinas apart from those in theme parks. I think we have 3 years left before she dies on the calendar.........so we're working towards getting Cliffside 110 ready to go into service.

IRM russian decapod 1630 is practically a sure bet for a full 2014 steaming season, and the shay is barking not far behind it for operation.

So it is not just a cosmetic restoration? And 4501 should be up and running by the early spring or so right? And what about NKP 587?

It would be great if K&T #14 were up and running by 630's June 7 trip from Chattanooga to Stearns KY, but I don't know if that is likely. Anyone have any inside information on that project?

While it will not be running in 2014. Frisco Mike #1352 will be moving via railroad flat in the fall from her tomb in central Illinois to the West 3rd Street roundhouse in Cleveland, Ohio for its restoration to begin.

Thanks!!

Don't bet any money on it happening.

Isn't the clock running on 428 at IRM? If I recall correctly her boiler was test fired several years ago.

I'm not a steam shop volunteer, but here is what I have:

It needs wheel work; which is waiting on a piece of shop equipment to be repaired (Planer?). The machine was at last report, nearly ready to test. The air pump is also being worked on. The project, like the shay, is only worked on when there are more volunteers than needed for 1630.

The shay has tubes swaged, and is having work done on the front truck, as well as on the staybolts.

I know it was test fired but someone with the steam department will have to chime in on the exact status of her boiler ticket. I seem to recall that the tubes were put in before part 230, and at the time it qualified for grandfathering.

The word is that Heber Valley RR in Utah is planning to have ex-UP 2-8-0 #618 up and ready for operation by Memorial Day. (ex-GW #75 is still a long way off, though.)

The Sumpter Valley Railroad in northeast Oregon will have number 19, a 1920-vintage narrow gauge ALCO Mikado, in service for the 2014 season. Wood-burning Heisler number 3 will be going down for her overhaul after a charter in February.
