Hi,

It is amazing how many do not feel the need to check themselves. I try to proof my posts and I still have errors get through.

I've run into people who do not follow what I was taught - proof reading your letters (pre computer and pre spell checkers) is a way to show respect to others.

Same as for cursing and swearing all the time.

Anyway. TURNTABLES:

Does anyone know if the Hartwell Railroad turntable here in Georgia is still there?

OK, so back to turntables...

1) Anyone no what a "700 locomotive" is? I guess I don't no railroading as I don't no what that means? I know what "the 700" is, a certain 4-8-4 in Portland, but that's Portland, OR not Portland, ME and thus irrelevant to this.

(Looking at the second shot on CL, it doesn't look long enough to hold two of anything much, maybe a couple 44 tonners? I poked around on Google maps for a moment and couldn't find it, anyone have a good location?)

2) $110K? Does that come with the property and buildings?

Turntable is right here.

Got the length here somewhere, I'll track it down.

Edit: I have it as 100'. I believe that this is the D&H roundhouse where Steamtown's Nickel Plate Berkshire wintered once and suffered freeze damage when there was a disagreement with Steamtown and she was removed from the roundhouse and stored outside, causing damage to her boiler tubes since she wasn't fully drained.

Here it is: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Rouses+Point,+NY/@44.99175,-73.3750465,125m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!3m1!1s0x4cc98802cc912f89:0xad9eaa68dfbebc70!6m1!1e1

I believe we discussed this turntable about five months ago (in September 2015) when the same ad was listed on Pittsburgh Craigslist.

I have little doubt, personally, that this is just an updated version of the old 'sell the unwary the deed and toll rights for the Brooklyn Bridge' con.

What I am not as certain about is what this says about the scammers' perception of potential customers for this item. Who do they think would buy it, and why, and with what money? I would guess they have a waaaaay too enthusiastic conception of the whole grant 'thing', and a not too shrewd understanding of how most museums do their business.

I got a different take on it, maybe.

Could this be a post in a 'public' place to satisfy the requirements for some legal reason?

I doubt it highly.

There are community papers almost everywhere that 'thrive' on the business of 'official publication' of legal notices like foreclosures and bankruptcies, in columns and columns of three-point type, with the same obligatory nod to regular "public" content that the early broadcast shopping channels did to 'hold the franchise' for a TV station.

I have also never seen a legal notice with conscious misspellings and overtly ungrammatical construction in it...

The style of the alleged "phone #" included in the original Craigslist ad indicates they are trying to defeat the built in filter in Craigslist's software, in order to avoid any emails or other traces of an alleged 'purchase' showing up as evidence in the future.

SCAM.

I also find it highly suspicious that the ads were posted on the Boston and Pittsburgh Craigslist sites rather than a more local one like Plattsburgh or Albany. Why would they not market it to the local community unless they have something to hide?
