SCL SD-45 #2024 Preserved

Southern Appalachia Railway Museum (SARM) of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, is delighted to announce the pending arrival of former Seaboard Coast Line SD-45 locomotive number 2024. Built in September of 1971 by the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors, 2024 is powered by a Vee type 20 cylinder 645 E3 diesel engine and is rated at 3600 horsepower. Later in its career 2024 was renumbered 8924 by SCL successor Seaboard System and has passed through a series of shortline and regional railroad operators.

The engine has been re-painted to its original SCL livery by Railway Service Contractors in Grandview, MO and will travel to Oak Ridge for the final modifications back to its period appearance. She joins six other SD-45s in preservation and is one of three that are operable. To our knowledge she will be the only SCL painted locomotive in preservation.

I am so pleased to read this. I grew up in SCL country and for a short while didn't realize that a diesel could be painted a bright color, as I didn't see run-through power until I was already old enough to be aware of other railroad paint jobs.
God knows the SCL black was never all that attractive, but it did have a.... useful look about it, much like the Clinchfield did in the same era for their hood units.

VLIX is not in this to be a glory hog, but since you elected to remember, you remember correctly. VLIX has supported SARM since the early days and SARM I'm sure is happy to have the support.

Yes, I think the WC unit at IRM and "Hustle Muscle" are the other two.

Thanks for the reports. "You know you're getting old when"---locomotives that weren't even on the drawing boards when you got involved in railway preservation are now museum pieces. Then we have the Niles Canyon group that's restoring a Southern Pacific Krauss-Maffei diesel hydraulic locomotive--said to be one of the factors in motivating the US builders into coming up with higher and higher horsepower units.

Yes, I agree that the preservation of an SD45 and Seaboard loco deserves a round of hearty applause and support.

However, you may not know that the typical use of the animated Orson Welles Citizen Kane graphic is not salutary, but sarcastic:

Most of the other times I've seen it online, it's been what the image itself shows as opposed to the background: a very intense applause. Zero intention of being sarcastic or patronizing. That locomotive looks gorgeous, and is definitely something that deserves preservation. I was extra glad to know this still has the original 20 cylinder prime mover in it, as opposed to the de-rated 45's that ended their careers with 16 cylinder engines.

The total of operating preserved SD45's will soon increase from 3 to 4, as the Lake Superior Railroad Museum plans to have their freshly repainted NP #3617 (later BN #6417/WC/#6495/#7495) running next year.

I'm trying to think of all the preserved SD45s within the states.

GN 400 "Hustle Muscle"
NP 3617
SCL 2024
NW 1776
EL 3607
WC 7525
SP 8800

I thought there to be 1 or 2 more, but I'm not certain on it.

At any rate, its good to see more of this type being preserved. Its the time for the diesel to shine in the preservation spotlight.
