I third it, with the single caveat, a certain somebody your attempts to denigrate every idea on this board stay the heck out of it! It's about help, not humiliation.

While not a bad idea, that type of information is readily available elsewhere and the issues related to forming and running a non profit are not unique to rail preservation.

What might be useful is a carefully controlled list of links to useful sites and info
such as

http://www.irs.gov/Charities-&-Non-Prof ... onal-Tools

or the one to techsoup.org

Unfortunatly, an open discussion should be avoided because there are too many people who post messages on rypn with out checking the accuracy of their facts first.

Though I agree that the answers to "the basics" should be straightforward, demonstrably factual, and once corrected for various details and exceptions be "locked down"....

.... typically when someone objects to "open discussion," what they really object to are opinions contrary to their own.

Part of said proposed page, for example: "Do you really need a 501(c)3? Or, What a non-profit corporation gains you and doesn't gain you."

I think information on organizational structure, "do's and don'ts" for bylaws / articles of incorporation, etc are more apropos than simple how to's. As previously stated, there are online resources for finding our how to go about setting up a non profit, but a narrative brought about by people who have seen how organizations have faltered - or benefited - from certain types of setup (and the provisions included) would be ultimately helpful.
