Hello Friends,

I'm involved with a small project B&O blue from the 1940s might come into play. Does anyone have a color code for this paint?

Thanks,

Sorry. Blue for the solid blue freight scheme found on locomotives.

Cabooses of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad by Robert Hubler, and published by The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Historical Society, goes into some detail on the blue used by B&O for its diesels and cabooses. B&O used Dupont Dulux Bando Blue ("B and O Blue") starting in the 1930s. Chesapeake and Ohio used Enchantment Blue, which is apparently indistinguishable from Bando Blue. According to his research, depending on manufacturer, age of the paint, weathering, and lighting conditions, the blue takes on a variety of appearances.

Check with the B&OTHS for the nearest PMS (Pantone) equivalent for Bando Blue. (To my knowledge the C&O Enchantment Blue is NOT exact...)

If you were using Floquil, here is the matching formula:

25 parts Royal Blue (R152)
3 parts Engine Black (R10)
3 parts Signal Red (R65)

Of course since Floquil isn't made any longer, you would have to consider using an alternative-paint color chart for the constituent colors, like

http://www.paint4models.com/paintchart/ ... 00101e.htm

I'd recommend that after you mix up a batch to formula, make a swatch and take it around to all the paint stores or departments near you that have colorimeters, and have each one 'gin up a small batch of gloss (or whatever finish) paint in the 'indicated' color. Then compare the swatches to memory and then a Pantone book...

My notes indicate that B and O used Bando Blue from 1935 to 1965. The paint match is PPG 15504.
