Perhaps related remotely, but not directly, are the two Chippewa Valley Railroad coaches which were built by Sandley Light Railway Equipment Works in the 1950s and served the 15" gauge Hoot Toot and Whistle in Elgin IL before this 16" gauge operation in Eau Clare. ![]() http://www.chippewavalleyrailroad.com/ |

As far as I know, the Dennison Depot now owns all 6 of these cars. I can say for sure that Ohio Central/Age of Steam/G&W are not involved with them in any way. They are ex-CP home-built cars, also ex-Algoma Central Snow Train. Chris. |

On the coach and caboose (and maybe even the gon), how is entry to the cars made? Are they "open" on the side away from the camera, or are there side doors of some type? I apologize for not knowing and for asking the question on this "real" Chippewa Valley coaches thread. Les |

The Sandley smaller coaches loaded from one side only, with a door visible in the photo. The end doors were usually static and non-opening. It is interesting that for the 2' gauge equipment they built for Brookfield Zoo, the end doors were also non-operating and the platforms were under sized for actual use. People just loaded on the bench seats from either side of the car with a chain to keep passengers inside. I don't know anything about the other Chippewa Valley Railroad cars including the gondola or caboose pictured in the photo. It is my understanding that this group engaged in steam restoration at many different scales. O. |

General History: These 6 cars were built by CP as 68 seat divided coaches, of a total of 99 such cars (#2200-#2298) which were completed from shells built by both CC&F (83 shells) and NSC (16 shells), which were delivered to CP for completion between 1947 and 1949. Algoma Central acquired 18 of these cars between 1971 and 1973 as #415-#432. AC acquired a 19th car in 1973 as a parts source. Car Histories: Both Randall and Chris VanderHeide's website (http://www.trainweb.org/algoma/proster.html) give the same car histories: CVRX #421, ex-AC #421, nee-CP #2254, acquired in 1971, completed in 1950, CC&F shell. In the RR Picture Achives album, Fred Stuckmann lists this car as nee-CP #2259. CVRX #422, ex-AC #422, nee-CP #2244, acquired in 1971, completed in 1949, CC&F shell. This is the car that was not on site when Fred Stuckmann took his photos. Current status unknown. CVRX #425, ex-AC #425, nee-CP #2268, acquired in 1972*, completed in 1950, CC&F shell. CVRX #426, ex-AC #426, nee-CP #2255, acquired in 1972*, completed in 1950, CC&F shell. CVRX #428, ex-AC #428, nee-CP #2277, acquired in 1972*, completed in 1949, CC&F shell. CVRX #429, ex-AC #429, nee-CP #2237, acquired in 1972*, completed in 1948, CC&F shell. *Randall lists these 4 cars as acquired in 1972, VanderHeide lists these 4 cars as acquired in 1973. All 6 of these cars were sold to Chippewa Valley in 1996. Sources: 1. "Streamliner Cars Volume Three: ACF - Other Builders" by W. David Randall (RPC Publications, 1982) 2. Chris VanderHeide's Algoma Central passenger car roster: http://www.trainweb.org/algoma/proster.html, which also has the dispositions and sale dates for the other 12 ex-CP #22xx-series coaches. |

I believe the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway may have purchased them. I'm 95% sure. I'll get a definite answer from a good source I have in the next day. |

I'm not sure why the subject is being brought up again. This is the answer. Hocking Valley Scenic Railway bought the coaches from Dennison last year. They are currently on Hocking Valley property to be refurbised for use. |

Traincrew, The subject came up because I saw the cars on the CSX line last Sat Oct 24 crossing over W. Town St in Columbus and I wondered where they were headed. If they were already at Hocking valley last year what are they doing in Columbus? Or was there a delay in the purchase? |

rs2alco wrote: If they were already at Hocking valley last year what are they doing in Columbus? Or was there a delay in the purchase? Just an educated guess, but not necessarily a delay in purchase or that the cars have been on HVSR property before now (traincrew might have meant that the cars are now on their property after having been moved this last weekend as you witnessed); perhaps the reason that the cars were not moved before now is that it took this long to do a current COT&S (that's cleaning, oiling, testing, and stenciling) of the brake system, which must be current before any passenger car can be moved in interchange on its own wheels. |

What I should have said, It takes a long time to convince CSX to move something old. It also takes several thousand dollars in shipping fees to move the cars over two different railroads. But we now have the cars. But it did take over a year to get them. All of the mechanical items were completed several months ago. We were just waiting for the paper work to be approved. |
