Post subject:  SP Sunset Limited Cars (Budd, 1950 & 1954)

Overview:

In June 1948, SP placed an order for 76 cars to re-equip the Sunset Limited. The cars were built in Budd Lot #040, and were delivered between March and July 1950. The order consisted of 5 club lounge diners, 6 baggage-RPOs, 13 chairs, 5 baggage dorms, 5 divided coaches, 6 diners, 6 club lounges, and 30 10RM-6DB sleepers (5 of these were built with blunt ends).

The order also included 2 chairs for the Golden State.

In 1951, the 6 baggage-RPOs, 13 chairs, 5 baggage-dorms, and 5 divided coaches were transferred and renumbered from SP to subsidiary T&NO. Except for one of the RPOs, these cars were transferred and renumbered back to SP in 1961. The lone RPO had been transferred back and renumbered in 1953. When transferred back to SP in 1961, the 13 chairs and 5 divided coaches were placed in different number series.

In February 1953, SP placed an order for 15 additional chairs, which were delivered between March and April 1954 in Budd Lot #9613-140. The 5 divided coaches from 1950 had been numbered #2359-#2363, the 13 chairs had been numbered #2364-#2376, and the 1951 transfer of these cars to T&NO had left those number series vacant, so the 15 1954 chairs were numbered #2362-#2376, resulting in the 1950 cars being placed in different number series when transferred back in 1961.

I'm looking for current disposition information for a number of these cars.

I'm curious if any of the blunt end sleepers, with the streamlined cowling on the rear end have survived.

Thanks, MRLX1020, for all the info!

David--

I haven't found any leads on #9027, the only one of the five blunt end sleepers that wasn't either scrapped or wrecked.

Does anybody on here have a master disposition list for all the cars acquired by Roy Hofheinz for the planned Astrodomain??

8322 was recently purchased by the Arkansas and Missouri and will be in service shortly if not already on their trains. The car had been privately owned by a gentleman in the Minneapolis area and was being kept in Dennison, Ohio.

Crossed wires again!

I had the #4109 as:

#2375 (1st) to T&NO #448 (1951) to SP #2236 (1961) to Amtrak #4423. Stored (when??) and later (when??) sold to VIA #148 to HEP #4109 (when??). Active.

So if #2367 (2nd) is #4109, then what's the current status of #2375 (1st)??

Thanks in advance.

#9027 sold in 1968 to Judge Roy Hofheinz-Astrodomain (Houston). Current status unknown.

9027 was sold to Craig A. Rasmussen of Los Angeles. Mr. Rasmussen was one of the owners of Overland Rail Tours which leased the car and it was lettered with "OVERLAND" in UP-block letters on the letterboard, it retained the number 9027 and was also named "Techachapi."

Reportedly the cars sold to Judge Hofheinz by SP did not have the usual requirement that the cars not be used to carry passengers over the SP.

The car was later sold to FCM along with several other cars from the Overland Rail Tours fleet.

Mr. Rasmusssen also owned the Pullman-Standard built SP #9043, also a blunt-end car.

Post subject:  Re: SP Sunset Limited Cars (Budd, 1950 & 1954)

It is what Mike Palmieri has in the Amtrak roster that he wrote. Unfortunately he doesn't include a retirement date and a disposition so it is likely the car was still at least on the roster when he created the file.

AMTK 4423 was converted to HEP in 1981 and rebuilt again to mail car 1763 (date unknown) which is still in use by Amtrak as a baggage car.

Thanks, Jerry, for the info!

That being the case, then the history of the three chairs in question looks like this:

SP #2375 (1st) to T&NO #448 (1951) to SP #2236 (1961) to Amtrak #4423 to HEP 40 seat ADA coach #4017 (1981) to postal storage #1763 (2000). Active.

SP #2362 (2nd) to Amtrak #4425. Stored (when??) and sold (when??) to VIA Rail #148. Current status unknown.

SP #2367 (2nd) to Amtrak #4430. Stored (when??) and sold in 1993 to VIA Rail #189 to HEP #4109. Active.

How does one acquire a copy of Mike Palmieri's Amtrak roster??

Thanks in advance.
