I just got through watching a You Tube video of 630 on the Rathole this past week, and she was wearing a different whistle...a finely toned one at that! My wife, who has heard train whistles in her life for nine years, noticed the difference. What is it?

Can't help with the specifics, but she was wearing it for the Railfest trips last year, then it disappeared for a while to be replaced by the Virginia & Southwestern 3-chime. Came back for Railfest this year, I believe some of the Summerville trips and the NS trips this past weekend. If I'm not mistaken, it's also the whistle that 4501 was wearing during 1994 on the Kingsport, TN trips.

Somebody said something about a Southern Railway six chime? I'm sure that those in the know (Mark Ray, Steve Freer?) will "chime" in.

The "know-it-alls" on YouTube video comments are claiming it's either a Nathan six-chime or a Central of Georgia knock-off of same.....

It is a Central of Georgia 6. This is the same that both 4501 and 610 have carried often in the past, as well. We've had an L&N 6, the V&SW 3, and an IC 3 on 630 as well.

Can anyone confirm this is an ex Cofg whistle? Does the TVRM own this whistle or is it a privately owned whistle?

SR6900, do you know who built it? Did the Central buy it or did they build it in house?

It is the whistle that K.C. Jones used. We know this because someone's friend's uncle blew it all the time while he was conductor on the Pennsylvania Railway as they went through the Appalachian Mountains on a run from Montana to Illinois. It has been handed down from generation to generation via flea markets, garage sales, and online auctions. Oh yeah...and it was found in a barn after being lost for almost 200 years.

Just kidding. Go by what Kyle said as he is a head end guy.

Careful, Brother Freer. This is how most eBay rail item descriptions come about.

The whistle sounds excellent, very nice!

As for that first video, would somebody please tell that guy about Final Cut Pro? 2:45 of waiting for the train to be visible in a 3:30 video is a bit much...

Please educate me some here. I was only aware of the Central 5 chime. I have one of them. What I can see in most Central steam photos is that same big ole 5 chime. The Central had a bronze foundry at Macon where they were made. Where was the 6 used? Dern sure is a pretty whistle. Got me wanting one.
