Howdy Jeff, How are you? From what you wrote, it sounds like the photos date from the fall railfan weekend of 1974, when the 40 went back into service. She was given white tires, big block letters on the tender in white, and was named E P McHugh on the cab. The McHugh Brothers in-house sign painter who did all their trucks & cranes did the lettering on 40, along with the recently rebuild Baldwin switcher. Her smoke-box number plate should be red with brass lettering and numbers. As far as I know, 40 only ran like this up to December 1974, when she started having her paint job modified. I had helped with the summer 1974 overhaul of 40, working with guys like Wayne Godshall, Ed Russell, Bill Coffee, Kenny Andrews, and a whole bunch of NH&I volunteers that I can not remember the names. Do you have any photos of the 1533 from the same time? I’ve been looking for in-service photos of the 1533, especially from the summer of 1973 & 1974. Hope this helps – David Notarius, London UK, ex New Hope Pa.

Just be aware that there is a lot of 'revisionist history' on that website-

NO WAY!!!!!

As I've read this stuff over and over, I just laugh. There are many truths in there, but there are also much factual information left out that would show another side of the story that does not paint as rosy a picture of some folks.

Its still a good read, despite the horrid amounts of grammatical and or spelling mistakes, and many good photos. I give them credit for putting it together.

I posted this on the "1980's" post, but I figured I'd post here as well:

Shameless, shameless, shameless plug...My parents took video from the 80's of the NH&I - I've compiled the footage into two videos below - included are scenes of #40 in that color scheme, McHugh diesels, and just look at the paint on those passenger cars!

Hi Jeff, Yes, the silver smoke box on 40 is from the 1980's. I only work on her a few times in passenger service in 1974 before I left the NH&I but thought the 1533 was a better steam keeper. The 1533 was superheated, 40 was not. As for Mr Moxley statement (Eliot, is that you?), when it comes to historical accuracy, the McHugh site is just – ok. The site is written from one point of view. The truth is, if anyone ever did a completely accurate history of the NH&I, from 1967 to 1974, (it would be next to impossible now, since most of the “suspects” have gone to the big round-house in the sky), no one would ever believe it. I was there for 2 years and I still do not believe some of the stuff I’d seen. But that’s another story for another time. The Machugh site is good for dating paint schemes on the locomotives and rolling stock. By far, the best paint scheme ever on the 40 is the one she currently has. Hope everyone is having fun out there – David Notarius, London UK ex NH&I 1973 -74

Ps – Once again folks, I’m looking for in service photos of the 1533 circa 1967 – 1974. Thanks – That American in London….

Kurt Bell is working on the story. I've helped him with some of the material and memories. Len Smolsky is still alive in Levittown, Pa., and the treasurer, Tom Ambler in Ambler, Pa.

Here is a question; ( I can't recall if I asked this before)

What was the story behind the dozen or more blue and yellow ex CNJ coaches that were stored, seemingly forever and eventually in derelict condition, on the long passing siding in Wycombe?

I remember them being there through 1988, and probably later, but they then disappeared into the blue.

I had heard rumors that they were bought by the Grand Canyon Railway, but they obviously never went there since the GCRY wound up using ex-SP Subs for their operations.

So -
who brought them to NH&I?
when did they arrive?
why were they there?
where did they go after BCRP&RC took over?

I think these were there even after 1991. I recall them being of wood construction with NJDOT logos and lettered for Black River. Perhaps I'm mixing that up a bit; not sure.

Some of the wooden former Black River cars were at Wycombe for some time. I remember seeing one slowly disintegrate and eventually collapse over several years. Maybe overlapping in time were a group of CNJ coaches (with NJDOT 'arrows') that I was told had belonged to the Grand Canyon. Later five of those coaches wound up owned by SRNJ, but never moved there. I did a survey on SRNJ's behalf in '92/'93/'94, but really don't feel like looking for my file copy of that report. I also have no Idea what happend to them, either.

Hi Guys; Any word on the progress of NdeM 4-8-4? Also, one of the wooden coaches that I believe the BR&W sold that ended up on the NH&I was one of the last wooden Lackawanna passenger coaches. Does anyone know what happend to it? Did it fall apart in Wycombe? Thanks - Dave

Definitely mixed up there. lol

CNJ cars were steel, blue and yellow with the NJDot Circles, but no lettering for BR&W.

Yes, it did. See your other thread for my recollection of that car.

Hi guys, I probably know the answer already, and I’m sure the usual suspect will point me at previous threads, but I think it’s time to poke the proverbially stick into the air. Does anyone from the New Hope & Ivyland know what the "offical" plans (short term & long term) and restoration timetable is for the 1533 and the Mexican 4-8-4? I also heard thru the grapevine that some NH&I people are trying to start a "Friends of the 1533" group. Any word on that? Thanks again - David Notarius, London UK - ex New Hope PA
