Post subject:  Hurricane Sandy
Looking at the rainfall projections coupled with the wind warnings, and wondering if this will lead to flooding like the type that ravaged the Cass area in 1985. I did see that the crew of the tall ship "Bounty" was valiantly trying to outrun the storm to safer waters when she began to take on water and eventually sank...perhaps the first historical loss (and hopefully the last) of this storm.

Pocahontas county got some rain, but should now be getting snow and is under a blizzard warning. Any road north of DC, north to Maine and west to Pittsburgh area subject to flooding/wash out damage is under high risk. You can see remote sensed precip amounts here:

Photos (not mine) a short while ago at the Baltimore Streetcar Museum, from http://wheelsee.net/blog/2012/10/29/san ... -baltimore . Water mains under Falls Road are overflowing into the adjacent Jones Falls (creek), and threaten the BSM property, but so far it looks OK. The runoff from the CSX embankment at the overpass abutment is especially worrisome--the Belt Line could well suffer a washout from the obscene amount of runoff, but the BSM gets puddles there like in the photos with almost every thunderstorm or hard rain. The last photo looks southeast towards Penn Station opposite both the east portal of B&P Tunnel and the southeast end of the car barn, which is--in this photo, at least--about two feet above the water level on Falls Road, which runs down and away from that spot. Arch in the background is the North Avenue Bridge spanning the Ma & Pa, the PRR/Amtrak at B&P Junction, etc.

My wife and I sandbagged the doors of the car barn this noon with bags left over from Isabel a year ago. During Isabel those sandbags protected the Visitors Center while tarps and ballast were piled in front of the car barn, but this year I think the BSM backhoe may not be operable.......

THIS JUST IN: TV reporter reports Jones Falls rising about 2-3 feet in the past hour or less at Clipper Mill, about a mile north of, and several feet above, the Museum (The Falls is called the Falls for a REASON--the creek has a couple dams and "falls" between there and the Museum/Ma & Pa yard area)..............

Evacuation of a few apartments in the lowest-lying areas of Ellicott City, Md. (near the B&O RR Station Museum) are being ordered at this time;

All the apartments are above storefronts and the water would reach the doors leading to the upstairs living spaces.

What Sloan-Beard said is unknown is if the water could rise any further after 3 a.m. which could flood the stores on the ground level. And if the water does rise as predicted, she said, “we’re going to have to close the lower end of Main Street to vehicular traffic because of standing water.”


These buildings are across the street from the station/museum.

By Ellicott City standards, this is tame stuff; an absolute monsoon hit will flood Tiber Creek through town and cause much more havoc. What's described/predicted--so far--is "bush-league" stuff and nothing like the devastation of 1972's flood.

So, in review;
1)Subway Tunnels under the East River are flooded
2)Parts of the Ground Zero construction site is under water
3)1.9 Million people in New Jersey alone are without power
4)The HMS Bounty sunk
a)Within the last hour, the Captain is still missing, and one crewman is reported dead according to The Star http://www.thestar.com/news/world/artic ... ll-missing
5)The vast majority of schools in Massachusetts remain closed (Barring Leicester Public Schools)
6)Parts of Cape Cod are under feet of water
7)I haven't heard anything about Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket, so I'm assuming both islands are dead at the moment and are likely to remain so for some time.
8)The Consoldated Edison facility at East 14th Street "exploded" late last night
9)Floodwaters in the Breezy Point neighborhood in New York City have cut off firefighters from what some news networks have described as an "inferno"
10)Most of Manhattan is without power
11)Conneticut has roughly 500,000 power outages
12)Some of the effected areas in New York and New Jersey won't see repairs beginning until tomorrow at the earliest
13)The Brooklyn-Battery tunnel is flooded "end to end"
14) 60 people in the Caribbean countries have been added to the death toll thus far
15) Two hospitals (NYU Langone and Coney Island Hospital) suffered failures of back-up systems
16)There's a tower crane dangling over West 57th Street, across from Carnegie Hall
17)At least 16 Americans have perished during this crisis

The storm tracked farther north when it came across the Chesapeake Bay, so we did not see the continued high winds and rain that were predicted in the Washington, DC area this morning. With relocation to higher ground at NCTM, our biggest concern with storms is tree limbs falling on the overhead wire. A crew did a lot of tree trimming in the last few weeks well in advance of Sandy's march north from the Caribbean, so hopefully we'll be ok. I do not know if the Chesapeake Beach Railway Museum was flooded. Cumberland and Frostburg received snow.

So far, southwest PA has escaped any major effects from Sandy. Pennsylvania Trolley Museum facilities unaffected. The high wind predicted overnight did not materialize. Some minor local flooding reported and very minor power outages. We dodged the big bullet on this one.

I just received a report that the train station in Stewartstown, PA, went through the storm fine--only a couple of slate roof tiles were displaced. We hope to get a track inspection crew out by the end of this week to check the ROW. -- Ray

Lots of rain and wind in Cumberland, trace amounts of snow. Wind gusts over 50 mph were reported.

Frostburg got hit with a heavy wet snow, close to 6 to 8 inches.

WM303 can comment on how his railroad faired and if the George's Creek caused any damage.

The Cass, WV area got hit hard with snow... I heard reports of 18" to 26" and still snowing.

My fellow Vol. FD members and I have been pumping out basements and dealing with downed trees since 8:00 pm. last night.....

The Space Shuttle Enterprise has what appareas to be some serious damages at her 'temporary' perch on the USS Interpid. The 'tent' for her has collapsed and the tail seems to be missing some parts.

That's just from what you can see from the outside, God knows what else got damaged. At least she didn't do a half-gainer into the water...
