It saddens me to report that the "new" (ca. 1909-1914) station at Charles Town, W.Va. has been demolished in the last couple of weeks. Passenger service on this line ended about 1962 or so; the station here had been vacant for quite a number of years, although for a time it had been leased for an unloading operation of some sort.

Interestingly, the older station this one replaced was moved across the tracks and became a house. It is still around, and was restored a few years back.

A short distance to the north of the station site is a level crossing with the former Baltimore & Ohio line (which long, long before had been the Winchester & Potomac) running from Harpers Ferry to Winchester, Va.:

Charles Town, W.Va. is named for Charles Washington, a brother of George Washington; it's about 10 miles or so from Harpers Ferry, in horse and apple country (at least, more so in the past than now). Its courthouse, still in service, was the site of the trial of John Brown following the raid in Harpers Ferry in 1859, and was also the site of a treason trial against early members of the United Mine Workers union in the early 1920s. The N&W line here is the Shenandoah Valley route, running from Roanoke, Va. to Hagerstown, Md. Nearby towns on this line that still have stations include White Post and Boyce in Virginia, Shepherdstown, W.Va. (restored--and a cemetery there is the site of O. Winston Link's grave), and Sharpsburg (occupied by a model railroad club) and St. James (station moved a block or two away to become a residence) in Maryland.
