All,

Follow the above link to my quick visit at Winslow Junction, where the CNJ’s Blue Comet once stopped, and shore bound passenger trains passed through at 90mph. Now partly taken over by nature, some by the scrapper, the scavenger hunter, copper wire seeker, rust, and graffiti artist. A very still quiet morning amongst the titans of the former Santa Fe, Bessemer, Susquehanna, Erie Mining, and Canadian National Railroads. Sadly, none look to have wheels turning anytime soon.

Stripping away color and the conversion to black and white enhances textures, tones, shadows, contrast, and shapes – at least to my eye so catching.

For the megapixel counters: other than the first photo; all were taken by a 9-year old 11.4MP first generation digital SLR and fixed 50mm lens. Old school technology!

Click on “Slideshow” at the top right of the screen, or an individual thumbnail for a full-sized view.

Enjoy,
Matthew

Those are some really good photos. Nice catch. I wish I had the extra money to buy a DSLR and extra lenses to make good photos. I wish there was also some old railroad pictures of my area. The railroad in my area was taken up before I was born, roughly in the 1985's, I was born in 1996.

I spent time around Winslow Junction in the mid-1950's. This is a sad testimony to what has occured in 55 years.

I am by there every three or four weeks. Where are the stripped diesel and caboose frame?

Later!

Ira,

I'm curious: do any of my images from Winslow resemble anything you saw so long ago?
Was the tower there? The double tracked overhead bridge?
If you have any pictures, please post them!

Thanks,
Matthew

Oh yes. There were no weeds, lots of ballast and very shiny rails on the PRSL. Jersey Central was more like the NJT track is now.
Lots of trains too.
I have no photos but I do have a short 8mm film clip I shot of a Jersey Central Camelback on a fan trip.

Here's the link to the ICC accident report referenced in the historic marker:

Correction, the wreck in this report was either misdated or two happened within three weeks of each other-misdating is not impossible-i found a misdate in a report about a wreck by grandmother could recall with absolute clarity until a couple years ago.
