This is an episode from my modeling YouTube channel that has a interesting historical turn.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5ls0AJIOEo

This video follows the path of the suburban trolley line: The Worcester and Southbridge Street Railway. it was later incorporated into the Worcester Consolidated Street Railway and was part of the system of lines that were controlled by the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad. The area that is covered is from Bryn Mar Street in Auburn MA. to the intersection of Routes 20 and 169 on Charlton MA.

Part of the allure of this section of the trolley line is that a good chunk of the line in the video is not normally above water! The first stops on the video show where the line ran through an area called the "Great Cedar Swamp", it was later dammed and used for power in Worcester's tiered system of reservoirs providing power to the mills and city. It was then and is still called Dark Brook Reservoir.

That's what they called the swamp... A reservoir. Surviving parts of that swamp surround my neighborhood, so in essence I live on an island! There are also some trails nearby used for ATVs and snowmobiles. I wonder if any of those trails were the old roadbed? And if that swamp extends all the way to Auburn, I wonder how close the line was to my grandmother's house... So many questions, so few answers. I think I'll be doing some more research. I just find this fascinating!
