So there have been many topics on here about what should be preserved, and then theres the why bother preserving it threads, etc. So, here's mine. The Niagara Railway Museum Inc. has an opportunity to aquire one of the few remaining MLW S-3 slugs. From the info I've gone through, I have found that no other group in Canada has saved one of these units. Of course, without the mother unit, they are nothing more than a heavy piece of scrap. However, it is a piece of railway operations, and is something that would make for a unique display. I was wondering if any group in the US preserved a slug. Not sure of the exact timeline the acquisition will take place, but we are hoping within the next month, with movement to our site in the Spring. Just ahve to figure out a cost effective (he says trying not to laugh!!) way to move the 130ton beast to our site in Fort Erie. |

The B&O Museum has a WM BL2 + Slug set. It's a nice piece. |

Not a smart aleck comment, nor sarcasm, but wouldn't you guys better better served using the money to repair Fort Erie's #6218? The work done on 6167 this past year and prior, is an enviable accomplishment that is directed to something already "in hand". I have nothing against further preservation, but here is a fan trip Queen that has rotted into terrible condition. If anyone is going to save her, it better start now. Again, just a rhetorical comment, not a slam. |

I had started a thread last year asking about any preserved slugs and calf units and got several responses. There was a FM trainmaster slug preserved too that I thought was unique. |

VMT's, an ex-Virginian Ry. FM H24-66. A mother unit, Alco C630 N&W # 1135 is also at VMT and was just repainted. |

Again, just a rhetorical comment, not a slam. Not with our money! 6218 has been allowed to rot because the Town has never properly cared for her. Even now, with a separate group raising funds for the cosmetic restoration, they are not eager to do anything. The Niagara Railway Museum Inc. is located in Fort Erie, a stones throw from 6218, but we have said all along, we will not put any of our money towards a Town owned locomotive, nor do we have any interest in owning her ourselves! We are there for our own purposes, and while we support the side group 100% and are working with them to see something done, it is ultimately the Town's decision on what happens with her. Yes, she is a rusting pile of scrap, a terrible fate for a locomotive that is known throughout the east of Canada and the US. We have our own issues, repairing a building that has been closed and heavily vandalised for 20+ years, moving the rest of our equipment on site, restoring our own locomotives, constructing track, and of course, the always fun, fundraising!! If you want to see something done to 6218, make a donation!! I don't mean to sound harsh, but as long as that engine is owned by the Town, nothing will be done... Ken |

In Monticello, IL, the museum has a former NS slug that was once a Southern RS-3. It is not restored. Ryan |

Again, just a rhetorical comment, not a slam. NRM is a ifferent organization, with absolutely no ties to 6218 and the town- owned "railway museum". I'm sure NRM is as anxious to see 6218 treated right as the rest of us are, but they have their own major projects underway and can't afford to subsidize what the town should have been doing for the last 40 years. It should be noted that NRM is starting right, in the former CNR Fort Erie diesel shop. Would I ever love to have a facility like that available at our museum, LOL. They already have three locomotives on site, and all are stored inside with plenty of room left for their remaining cars and future acquisitions. I'm very impressed with the group's accomplishments, and can't wait to see where 2012 leads them. Steve Hunter |
