Sorry, not about preservation, but there was a horrific collision of two NYC trains in the early 60's, all Diesel units, which destroyed a number of ALCO FA's, I think an RS unit and at least one Geep. I have no other information, other than a single photo of the debris being picked apart by rescue crews. Can someone give me a specific date, place, or year? |

That was on the West Side Freight Line in Manhattan. You can download the ICC accident report here. A link to a pdf is under 1967: http://ntl1.specialcollection.net/scrip ... _railroads It happened in May 1967. Double track was being operated as single; eastbound was running against the current of traffic and had no signals. Westbound had an RS3 in the lead running long hood forward on a left-hand curve, so signals were not visible very far in advance. For some reason the guys on the left side of the cab didn't observe or call a signal. Other procedures also contributed to the accident. Walt L. |

Locos involved were one FA, two FBs, one RS-3, one RS-32, one GP35. The "coach" was an NYC mail and express train "rider car", on the head pin of one of the trains. Howard P. |

Again, gentlemen, thank you. The U28B looks like it might have survived the wreck. The FA cab might have survived, but everything else was totaled. Thanks again for your assistance with finding the facts. |
