This came through on my preservation rss feed. This bridge has had a long and interesting history including a mysterious fire, near demolition, sale for $1, huge fines for navigation light issues, and conversion to a trail. Talk about doing the impossible. While I would much prefer to ride a train on this route, taking a walk over the bridge is not a bad alternative to removal.

Maybe it won't work out. But maybe seeing if it does will be the best adventure ever.

Just got out to this last weekend.

I'd highly recommend this for rail enthusiasts and the family in general. The most remarkable thing is the number of people out there. I was there on an overcast, rain-threatened Sunday, and there were hundreds of people on it.

They maintain they've had - get this - 750,000 visitors - since this opened in October '09. If I hadn't seen the crowds myself I'd say that was impossible. They also maintain it has triggered an economic development boomlet locally.

They do a pretty fair job documenting the rail history of the bridge, there are cabooses at trailheads, and an operating signal on the east side that has been restored. It might not be live rail, but as a rail history exhibit, it may be in a class by itself here now.

You also have wonderful views of the West Shore (CSXT), and it was hopping with one train after the other headed south to the City.
