We discovered a stamping in raised letters on the inside of the tender number plate. CNR.M Would this be simply CNR Maintenence dept?? |

Peter, as you look through the engine, you will find "CNR M" stamped on all sorts of parts. I'm guessing the "M" would stand for Montreal, which is where the the mechanical department was stationed. Did you take a picture? |

AS I said, "CNR M" is on just about everything made by CN. 56-LB-62 is the pattern number. The two letters tell you what the part is for, and what material the part is. Care to guess what "L" and "B" stand for? |
