"Norfolk Southern informed The Henry Ford that the GG-1 locomotive could not be moved due to clearance issues.' Those issues, as we understand them, have to do with the width of the locomotive, and the simple fact the train does not fit properly on the tracks and therefore cannot be moved,''

Too bad that NS had to change the gauge of the track after taking over the old PRR.

Who, or what, is the GG-1 Historical Locomotive Preservation Society?

I'm having trouble visualizing a GG1 in Miami. 148 in Creede is bad enough............

Of course, tri-rail wasn't in existance when I lived down there, so perhaps electric heavy railroading is now part of the city, and the GG would be at home? Catenary to Key West?

There is something else going on here. The GG-1 was designed to go through the North River tunnels into Penn Station, New York, where the clearances are very tight, particularly side clearances. For example, standard diesels don't clear into Penn Station, but the GG-1 did.

My understanding is that the GG1 is articulated, similar to the Kennecott Copper engines. It separates cleanly on a line about 36" above the ground:

The lower frames are so complete that if you plumbed some ABDW valves to the brakes, you could haul it in a train without the carbody, lol!

So, I could see Norfolk Southern going "Hmm, so how do these pieces swing out in curves?" I would expect teh frames to be pretty well behaved, but what about the carbody? Will the nose swing out? Will the carbody centerline swing in? They don't know.

Anyway, it looks to me like there are three major subassemblies there: the carbody and two frames. Anybody know the weights of these components?

There should be a law against this sort of thing....

A GG-1 in Florida?....WTH? I guess its like the 2839 being in California, though the hudson is at a well funded and established museum compared to this.

I'd be very surprised if any real "outside" money is funding this. It's going to be another case of "preservation until death" at which point it will either be scrapped in place, fall apart in place or fall apart enroute back north and be scrapped.

yeah, preservation at its' best.

Regarding the GG1 that is "too big" to fit the track, anyone heard of any particular reason why this locomotive has to be shipped on its own wheels? Usually this kind of problem can be solved with a couple of flatcars, sometimes at less than the combined expense than making an elderly locomotive roadworthy and shipping it as a locomotive. And the chances of it getting there without problems are sometimes a lot better with it traveling disassembled as a couple of loads on flatcars.

A GG-1 museum in Florida? Probably 20% of Florida residents saw and rode behind them before they retired and moved south. So why not a retired GG-1 move south too? If someone has the drive and the money to make it happen let em run with it.

Maybe it won't work out. But maybe seeing if it does will be the best adventure ever.
