Another big story out of the UK this years is the much anticipated completion of backdating the appearance of steam excursion favorite "Duchess of Hamilton." Built in 1938, she has been restored to her as built appearance after four years of work; including applying new skirting and new smoke box. Other engines of this class where blue with white stripes and I believe there was green with white stripes? It was this locomotive, in her streamlined state, that was in the US for the '39 World's Fair, although with the name and number of another engine. Due to a little "activity" she was stuck in the states until 1942. Five years later, she was destreamlined. http://www.vintagetrains.co.uk/tlw_6229.htm Non operational, an operational restoration in the future may be likely. Two other examples of the class survive, one of which is operational. Joshua |

One of the British steam heritage magazines details that the restoration was held up while the exact gauge of the steel was fabricated for the project! Wouldn't you love to see a K4s or J3 Hudson in this garb today? There remains a CB&Q 4-6-4 which was once streamlined, but is no longer. Thirties art-deco has only recently come back into popularity, but I think this project is "sweet". Thanks for posting the link. |
