What great news and a thorough report on one of the locomotives we desire to see under the most! Great report, Don. Great work, Strasburg steam shop crews! |

Thanks for posting a great report. I think the old boys in Altoona would be proud of what is being done. Would the Pennsy or anywhere have used similar methods 60-70 years ago? Did they ever replace sections or just replace the whole thing? Tom P |

Afternoon gents, Thanks for the encouraging words guys. Tom, the Pennsy probably would not "repair" or "restore" a boiler like this. Normal running repairs would be performed in the shops as necessary to keep the engine making money, but once the boiler and firebox had reached their "life," (and it has been suggested to me that that "life" might have been as short as five years), the assembly would be hauled off the frame and another assembly would be dropped into place. The locomotive would be shopped and put back to work. Comments have been made to me that the Pennsy had so many steam locomotives that boilers and fireboxes were like "disposable society" items today. I'd be interested to hear the opinions of those who frequent this Forum on that subject. If the statements are accurate, I could imagine the Pennsy inspecting those "disposed" assemblies for design and efficiency purposes. Learning from earlier design mistakes and improving future firebox/boiler assemblies. I imagine the inspected assembly components would be reused/recycled for new boilers. Thanks for the continuing interest in LIRR G5s Engine #39 de Don n2qhvRMLI |

The updates are great and soooo welcome! n2qhvRMLI wrote: If the statements are accurate, I could imagine the Pennsy inspecting those "disposed" assemblies for design and efficiency purposes. I'm no expert, but seems clear they inspected the disposed parts to determine where there was excess material that could be shaved off compared to the life of the rest of the part in question. Bob |
