From the article:
Quote:
Because the LIRR is prohibited by state law from making donations bigger than $5,000, it is calling the engines' transfer to the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum a "long-term loan."

Really? I thought that sister railroad Metro-North has donated a lot of stuff over the years - or is a retired FL9 only worth $5000?

Sorry! In my eagerness to respond, I should have done my research more thoroughly. The previous response in this spot was with regard to the G5's on Long Island. My bad.

MNCR has donated little if any equipment; RMNE has purchased (albeit for $1.00 in most cases) some old equipment from MNCR over the years. Our acquisition of FL9 MNCR 2033 (NH 2059) took almost 18 years and countless prodding by political staffers, of MNCR mid-level managers who seemed to continually and conveiently "forget" about the promise.

CDOT has had some equipment on long term lease to RMNE, and recently turned over title to two FL9s (2002 and 2019).

The LIRR/museum situation is in a difficult political environment; read the comments posted after that article to get some idea of the local landscape. Few if any positive comments about something as innocent as placing two little old locos in a local museum. But lots of nastiness.
