A discussion came up on RyPN recently about terms used to describe vehicles used to on street railways. Are they trolleys, streetcars or even street cars (two words)?

Likewise, I am always confused about the use of the terms “compound” and “mallet” when used to describe the design of an articulated locomotive. After some research on the subject I developed the following visual aide to help with this problem.

Ah, you've got to make sure it's not a Mallet. 'Cos if it's a Mallet it goes in the Mallet book. A Mallet has one hump, and a compound has a refreshment car, buffet, and ticket collector.

Yours, etc.
