The article does not explain the reason for Caltrans choice of a railway museum as a groundbreaking site. Hmmmmmmmmmm.

My guess:

1. The Museum is located directly along SR12, fairly near the center of the project.
2. The Museum has a nice paved parking lot, perfect for such a ceremony. ( not to mention rest rooms)
3. The Museum let them use the lot for free ( Or did they make a little on the deal?)
4. Nothing wrong with keeping on the good side of CalTrans and getting a few reporters to stop by.

All of the above plus county supervisors attending. After the ceremonies, WRM gave everyone a quick museum tour and an interurban car ride. Nothing like good PR with county supes.

Easy. WRM is the venue of choice, because it is the ONLY public facility around! Seriously... it's desolate out here.

That, and it has a modern, clean looking paved parking lot, a sharp looking visitor's center on well kept grounds... you drive off Highway 12, drive in, park, and the whole place looks really nice.

Our parking lot also served as the incident command center when the local fertilizer plant burned down a couple of years ago. Local fire rigs refilled from our fire tank.

And our new fire protection system is the standard for what was required when the fertilizer plant was rebuilt.
