Bah. You're going to have to do a LOT better than Harp (or Bass or Guinness, even) for THIS beer snob, mate...... How about Hoppy Otter from Otter Head in Devon? That's got a green label, at least..... As one of the few asinine twits that seeks out an orange shirt for the day, I submit this brilliant photo by Lee Rutter (courtesy Railpictures.net) from 19th Feb. AND AS AN ADDED BONUS: IT'S NOT PRESERVATION, EITHER!!!!!!  Having just been officially named Tornado by HRH The Prince of Wales (Charles) at York, the brand new A1 hauls the Royal Train to Leeds. |

Good thing Sandy doesn't live in Boston - British rather than Irish steamers posted on a St Pat's day thread! Orange shirt or not, I'd be seriously concerned about his welfare......... Didn't Guiness have a little steam railway running in their brewery? I'd like to experience that preservation firsthand. Corned beef and cabbage on the stove, homebrewed stout in the basement for after work, and Brigid's Blessings on all here and all our projects. dave |

Be sure to read the explaination of the signal used to control traffic in the tunnel. Definitely another reason to enjoy Guinness. |

Hey, I'm willing to dress down Ross Rowland and the 1361 here, and construct early-April press releases that have folks clicking on phony URLs and making panicky calls--I think my reputation as a rabble-rousing troublemaker is well established. As it turns out, as you'll see at the end of the article linked in the other post, several of the Guinness "lokies" were preserved one way or another, probably because they were so darned small compared to, say, a broad-gauge 4-4-0. Also because of that small scale--heck, if it was in the way, you could just use it as a desk--they also seem to have scattered somewhat widely. I think one even made it to mainland Britain, although both Guinness and the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland reportedly each hold at least one. OK, To maintain preservation content, first I have to throw in a link to a photo of my favorite green locomotive........http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=243556 And now, in the spirit of Sandy's rousing of rabbles, and having nothing to do with preservation, I'm going to subject you to my favorite Irish joke (being that I'm documented 1/4 Irish, with probabably a few undocumented tenths thrown in here and there, I am officially allowed to tell this without offending the political correctness police...........) Three guys go into a Pub after work to have a few beers, a Frenchman, a German, and an Irishman. As they are sipping away, a fly crashes into their fresh pitcher. The Frenchman exclaims "Mon Deiu" and covers his glass with his hand, indicating he wants no refill from this pitcher. The German says nothing, but calmly flicks the fly out of the pitcher. The Irishman promptly reaches over and picks up the fly. Holding it over his own glass, he says "spit it out, ye bastard........" With a virtual toast (Jameson's, of course) to ye all, Regards, |

Orange (if you'll pardon the color) Empire has what may be the only example of Irish rolling stock in the U.S.--a 1901 double-deck tram from the Hill of Howth tramway. I was driver (motorman) on this relic during the 1990's when we'd run it during special events. For a while, we even had a young woman playing the bagpipe to add a Celtic note to the ride. One interesting feature of this car was that it has dynamic brakes, probably a "retrofit" but undoubtedly long before diesel locomotives had this feature. Some of our visitors have been disappointed in its color scheme--it's blue and white, not green. An American of Hibernian ancestry decided to make a tour of "The Auld Sod". He was visiting his cousin Seamas in Dublin when March 17th rolled around, so they went to the St. Patrick's Day parade, which was a lot shorter than the visitor had expected. Noticing the disappointed look on his guest's face, Seamas said "Ay, wasn't much of a parade, was it? Sure an' if ye want ta see a real St. Paddy's parade, it's in New York City." |

Pine Creek in NJ has an Irish 3 foot gauge 4-4-0T, Lady Edith, and a few cars. I don't think the locomotive has seen operation for several years, though. |
