Came upon this photo in my photo steam on Flickr. http://www.flickr.com/photos/mateob/3092472693/ It's at an old Pyrite Mine, one of the oldest mines in the world. Some say they are the mines of King Solomon. There is some sort of museum there. |

That museum, and the mine site itself back in the 1970s and 1980s, would be some place to visit. The famous British railway photograph Colin Garratt took many pictures of the mine during that time; and they can be found in many of his books. There were eleven locomotives in the area at one time. In addition to the Garrett, there are/were several Robert Stevenson 2-6-0Ts and an 0-6-0 built at the late date of 1953-1954. At the other end of the scale, there is a Dubs 0-6-0T, now preserved in the museum, that was built in 1875 and shown in Colin's photographs in intact condition. Another Dubs of 1881 was stranded on edge of the open-cast mine by a rockslide; and I suppose is there to this day. There were some ancient overhead signals as well; though the tracks themselves were lifted. It must have been quite a place to explore; have no idea what is left today. |
