I seam to remember someone posting here about the axle drive chain on a G.E. 25 ton locomotive. Does any one know where to get one or have one to sell? Thanks |

You might want to try Larrys Truck & Electric. I know he had at least one later 25-tonner on site without an engine in it. It may be razor blades by now, maybe not. Larrys Truck Electric, Warren, OH 330-399-1881 |

I would try the Logan Corp., they are supposed to be the supplier for parts for the GE switchers, 1-800-669-1967. You could also try any good industrial supplier, like McMaster-Carr. A roller drive chain like that shouldn't be too difficult to locate. JohnB |

The chain should be a standard size. I will be in a building with a 25 tonner tommorrow. I'll measure up the chain on it and match it up with the appropriate size from Machinery's Handbook. Once you know the size you can order it from McMaster or whoever sells chain in your area. |

The roller chain between the axles of post-1945 GE 25 tonners is 2.50" pitch. The recent McMaster and Grainger catalogs only list up to 2.00" pitch. But 2.50 is a standard ANSI design and should be available. The wheelbase of the loco is 72.5" and the sprockets are 20 tooth, this figures out to about 16' of such chain. Pennsylvania Trolley Museum will be rebuilding a 1953 25 tonner in the coming months (and converting it to 62.5" gauge for our trolley system) and will be in the market for such a piece of chain. We'd appreciate any info on sources. We will be applying new sprockets and that requires the use of new chain as well. We have a 10' length of new 2.00" pitch chain to trade or sell, a size used on many smaller locos. The 25 tonner on display at the HQ of LTEX in Warren, OH is a basket case, missing a lot of components and what is there is in bad shape. For a line on some better 25 tonners contact Western Star Rail Services, Newark, OH, 740-344-3336. |

If it is 2 1/2" pitch then its a number 200 or 200 Heavy. The heavy chain has thicker side plates. I found two companies selling this chain: http://www.lucasindustrial.com/products ... le_strand/ http://www.diamondchain.com/products/catalog.php Sometimes HGR Industrial Surplus has roller chain. Many times its new stuff. I'll keep watch and if I see any I'll post it to this thread. Much cheaper rom them. |

From 1994 until 2001 I worked in industrial sales, and sold a lot of roller chain to various industries, including quarries where it sees a lot of use in power transmission. The largest domestic producer of roller chain is Emerson Power Transmission, their chain is sold under the Morse brand. It is good stuff, and at that time seemed to to last about twice as long as the "imported from Outer Mongolia" chain sold by Diamond and other companies. You can probably find Morse chain at your local industrial supply company (Applied Industrial and Motion Industries come to mind, Grainger may have it, but their prices are generally higher.) If you are a non-profit, you might would get a donation or a decent discount. If you're just going to move the loco every now and then, you might would be OK with the cheap chain. If it is going to be in fairly regular service I would definitely spend the extra money for the "good stuff". You won't be replacing it anywhere near as often. http://www.emerson-ept.com/eptroot/publ ... eChain.htm I have no connection with EPT or any industrial supplier, just wanted to mention a quality product. |
