After narrowly escaping being scuttled the Falls of Clyde has been transfered to a new preservation group in Honolulu, Hawaii. She is the only four masted ship afloat. She is the only sailing oil tanker She is a rare example of an iron hulled square rigger. Their new web site is friendsofthefallsofclyde.org Both money and physical help are needed. There have been some sad losses in the maritime world recently and this is a rare second chance. Additional information is in the last two issues of Sea History magazine. Ted Miles Ted Miles |

Errr....not the only 4 masted ship still afloat....the Moshulu (ex Kurt. 1904) is afloat here in Philly and the Pommern (1903) still is afloat in Finland are both 4 masted. Both of these are of steel construction, obviously built later than the Falls of Clyde, though all were built in Scotland on the Clyde. Now, if you're talking Iron Hulled, then yes.. |

Junior, I should have said square rigged on all four masts; that is the ship rig. The Moshulu and the Pommern are barks with a fore and aft rigged mast near the stern. There are several more of these such as the Passat, Peking and the former Padua. To be precise, the County of Peebles is also a four masted ship. She is beached at a Naval Base at Punta Arenas, Argentina. That is down on the Straight of Magellan at the bottom of South America. She is the first of that rig built in 1875. Ted Miles |
