D&H RS2 4020. Went to LIRR and is now Michigan Southern 977. Had a steam generator while on D&H. Last known remaining D&H RS2. Operational $80k

D&H RS3 4071. Went to Lamoille Valley where it got the chopped hood and #7803, then to Western Michigan RR and got #203. Currently in Iowa. Ran out of oil, seized rods to crank. $30k

D&H RS3 4094. Went to Lamoille Valley where is also got the chopped hood and #7804. Now at Michigan Southern. Missing parts, bad wheels. $40k

D&M RS2 466. Now Michigan Southern 466. Last ran in '97. Freeze damage. $40k


FWIW, processed HMS (heavy melt scrap) is running ~$300/ton. So, a 120 ton loco rendered for scrap may be worth as much as $36K.

The 466 may be the oldest extant RS-2.

If there's any operational life in these, I'm sure GVT will give a look at the right price.

Of course, I hear EMD is rebuilding again. Wonder how an RS-2 or RS-would be with a 710ECO rebuild package.

I'm reminded of the erstwhile "DeWitt Geep", a.k.a Alco RS-3m. There were some 70-odd units so converted, yes? Aside from a handfull today, there rest are seemingly unaccounted for. Were they scrapped?

I just rode behind a "RS-3M" on the Cape Cod Central today. This was done by Amtrak with a 12-567 engine for 1200 horse power.

The Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum rosters ALCO RS-3m, ex-Lehigh Valley Railroad #211 nee-Pennsylvania Railroad #8445. Restored into its Lehigh Valley colors, #211 is also a unique "Hammerhead" configuration with a high short hood that once held both a steam generator and dynamic brakes. She is now the last remaining example of that ALCO RS-3 configuration.

The #211 is serviceable, but the museum is in the process of raising the funds to purchase a new set of starting batteries through its Locomotive Preservation Fund which was started with the award of a 2007 NRHS Railway Heritage Grant. The museum hopes to have the funds raised, the batteries purchased and installed by our Diesel Days event on August 23-24.
