This weekend we have work parties scheduled Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Saturday and Sunday are "all hands" days working to open the railroad and the Cold Brook extension by opening day, May 24th. We need as many volunteers as possible to assist on Saturday and Sunday this weekend and the weekend of May 17th/18th.

Friday, May 9th

Earl Pardini will be leading a crew finishing up trackwork in Kingston this Friday, May 9th. The plan will be to insert the remaining 20-30 ties and plate and spike the remaining ties from the O&W switch to Washington Avenue. Earl will start at 9am between the O&W switch and Washington Avenue.

Saturday, May 10th

Cold Brook/MP 23.3

In Cold Brook, on Saturday May 10th, George Peck will be leading a crew leaving Phoenicia at 9am-9:30, with plans to fix two slumps at MP 23.3. If enough volunteers come, a second crew will be sent to jack up and tamp track on the Cold Brook Extension. Volunteers should arrive at 10am at the parking lot at the end of Cold Brook Road at Osborne's, and walk west from there to 23.3. This is an "all hands" call as these slumps must be repaired for the passenger train to operate east of 23.3.

Phoenicia

In Phoenicia, Al Johnson will be working on coach 702, continuing work on the windows. Some of the crew will work on the 701 getting it ready for opening day. Al will start 9:30-10am. As always, he can use additional help.

There will be no work in Kingston Saturday.

Sunday, May 11th

In Cold Brook, on Sunday May 11th, George Peck will be leading a crew leaving Phoenicia at 9am-9:30, with plans to continue trackwork to open the Cold Brook Extension. Volunteers should arrive at the iron bridge west of Cold Brook Station by 10-10:30am, and walk from there west to where the track crew is working. As before, this is an "all hands" call as the curves in the Cold Brook extension must be jacked and tamped before the passenger train can operate east of 22.7.

On Sunday, May 11th, the Cornell Street Yard will be closed.

Several dips in the track were jacked, tamped and aligned, and a large culvert unplugged. Two more small dips are expected to be jacked on Sunday. After the tamping was done, the crew cut several locust trees near MP 23, and cut down the last big tree on the Cold Brook extension at MP 22.45.

Sunday, May 11, 2008

Sunday, George Peck led a small crew back to 23.3 to finish the two remaining dips in this stretch of the line. With him were Steve Gollow, John Patane, and Chester Hartwell.

They completed jacking and tamping this stretch, so the line is now open for passenger service to MP 22.7.

Steve Gollow also did some cutting to open up the viewshed in this area.

After finishing their work, they took the worktrain back to MP 21.7 to inspect the small washout there before returning to Phoenicia.

Thursday, May 15th

On Thursday, May 15th, Earl Pardini will lead a crew near the O&W switch just east of Washington Avenue to finish spiking the 64 ties on this section of the line. He will be bringing the 401 down to run the air compressor to the spiker, so expect to see the 401 at Washington Avenue by the end of the day. This will complete our track rehabilitation program in Kingston until we extend the line further west this fall.

They will meet just east of Washington Avenue about 9am on Thursday. Bring a camera, and send me some photos to post!

http://naphotos.nerail.org/showpic/?200 ... 323036.jpg

Then we eased down to the bridge, making this the first train to the
bridge in 31 years:

Besides the deck, what is wrong with the bridge? It looks pretty good in the pictures.

Thanks.

Post subject:  Boiceville Bridge Repairs

John,

There is considerable scouring under the piers, which has resulted in a slight settlement of the middle pier. We had the bridge inspected by the County and the bridge was rated out of service for trains (but not MOW equipment). Obviously the timber deck is also a problem. The main girders are sound, but have had damage over the years and need repair.

There is universal agreement that the bridge should not have any full sized-equipment run over it, and that the piers should be rebuilt (in place). We are working on raising grant money for those repairs in conjuction with the county right now.
