Post subject:  Update from the DT&M Roundhouse

Below are some recently completed and currently ongoing projects at the DT&M roundhouse within Greenfield Village.

This has been quite an ambitious year in and around the Roundhouse illustrated below.

DT&I Box #10561 was repainted and lettered over the summer

This is one of our 40' C&O boxcars that was sandblasted and painted in the fall and awaits re-lettering

Also in late October the boiler of Detroit and Lima Northern #7, an 1897 product of Baldwin, was removed from its frame to facilitate repair.

While inside our Detroit and Mackinac caboose is getting some much needed attention.

Over our drop pit we removed the drivers from the Edison in order to replace the tires.

Additionally work continues on the tender frame of Detroit and Mackinac #8, As well as previously mentioned boiler work on #7. This is in addition to routine maintenance on our other regularly operating equipment including the Torch Lake (Which will amongst other things receive a new rear pilot beam).

I wanted to get back to this before it gets away. Do you have any further information on DT&I 10561? Builder? Built date? Any articles from Railway Mechanical Engineer or Railway Review?

The car appears to follow the upper body framing of the cars Dominion Car & Foundry built for the CP, and which AC&F built copies for several US roads, The post / side sill / crossbearer connections follow the same design as the cars that AC&F built for the Soo Line and several others, except all other examples I know of are 40' cars, with the exception of a group of stockcars built by Haskell & Barker for the Soo Line, but much later. I would like very much to learn some background on the origin of the design; AC&F used it on cars for several roads, but only the Soo had it built by other builders, as far as I know.

Any information anyone could add would be appreciated.

Some good work going on! One question though... Why is the sheet being made with the "heat and beat" method while there is a good working McCabe in the background? I have made a rear fluesheet and a doorsheet on an identical machine for a smaller engine with perfect results. Point being that the larger the sheet the easier to bend...

The McCabe was used for the majority of the bending. the corners into the crownsheet were "Heat and Beat" and the ogee of the keyhole was massaged in with heat.

The McCabe is a useful machine and I am eager to use it again. I am sure glad it is close when needed.

as seen on http://www.wabash-railroad.com/dti5-co-serv.htm

I tried to find any information on the DT&I boxcar in our files, and I could not find much. I tried to find any different numbers on the interior of the boxcar, and it reads 10561 on a roof brace.
The boxcar on the left in the picture above looks like the boxcar in question, note the cut out panels and the additional horizontal brace right of the door.

Chris,

Well, thanks for looking. The February, 1929 issue of the Official Railway Equipment Register shows DT&I 10500 – 10599, 99 cars in service at that time, so that would seem to be the road number. Unfortunately, the ORER doesn't give any information about builder or built date.

I'm surprised to see this is a 40' car… I took it to be a 36' car, but I guess the proportion of the 6' wide door is fooling me. I'm used to the Soo Line cars with their 5' wide doors, like the model pictured above.

Post subject:  Update from the DT&M Roundhouse- archbar truck rebuild

Image

An archbar truck that belongs to Detroit & Mackinac 0-6-0 no. 8 (Baldwin, 1914) has been rebuilt this past winter. It was not original to the locomotive as the builder's photo when it was Michigan Alkali 8 depicts timber beams, but the truck had seen much better days.

The leaf springs were a little too eager to become scrap.

With some new springs, bearing work, new journal box dust covers and pads, straightened brake rigging, new bolts, straightened bars, layers of painted-over concrete chipped off and fresh paint, the truck is ready to carry the front part of the tender. The other truck was rebuilt a few winters ago. No. 8's tender frame is now ready for a new deck.

Looks good! Can someone "predict" what will be going on at Greenfield Village just prior to the Owosso event in July? Will there be any special operations and/or tours given on Thursday, July 23? Which locomotive will be running, etc.?

While I'm digging, which locomotive will be in operation at Huckleberry around that time? Maybe a doubleheader weekend for railfans???

My wife and I were out there on our first visit a couple of years back and had a wonderful time. What an impressive building that roundhouse is. The staff in the roundhouse was wonderful, and one gave us an extended tour as it was a quiet day and no other visitors were about.
This year we are returning again, this time for two days so we can also see the Henry Ford Museum.
Keep up the good work!

The weekend of July 18th and 19th will be the Ragtime Street Fair in Greenfield Village. As with most special event weekends we will be operating two trains throughout most the weekend. With Saturdays hours extended until 9pm. The tentative plan is to operate the Edison and the Torch Lake. That is subject to the opinions of both locomotives and whether or not they wish to cooperate. In any event we have our G.E. diesel on standby duty.
