A June 1955 photo of the Mike not long after being placed on display in Hammond, Indiana:

A group has been formed to attempt a cosmetic restoration of the equipment there in Hammond:

Wonder if any of the kids in the photo are involved in the new organization today?

I wonder if any of these kids caused the damage noted in the photo of NKP #624 in Ron Ziel's 'Twilight of Steam' book! Looking through the liability-tinted lens of today's times, I can't believe anything as dangerous as a full-sized steam locomotive was left unprotected for kids to play on, yet we all know how common it was. I myself remember climbing on UP 4-8-4 #833 in Salt Lake's Pioneer Park when I was young.
