There used to be a article available online that provided assistance to people who wanted to do preservation and restoration work on park locomotives, with the title above. I believe the article was on the Association of Railroad Museums site, but I cannot find it after they merged into The Heritage Rail Alliance.

Ideas? Fire up the Internet Wayback Machine?

Would like to find this as a general survey resource to provide to others who are looking at refurbishing Northern Pacific 1356 in Missoula Montana.

I believe you may be referring to "Steam Locomotives Their Care and Maintenance" by David Conrad, produced in association with Illinois Railway Museum in 1974.

Edit: One revision to this 48 year old booklet should be the removal/handling of the "magnesia" (asbestos) insulation under the jacketing. Quite obviously this should only be handled by trained/licensed individuals who can safely remove and dispose of it. Another thing to check for prior to starting work is the presence of lead paint. I've seen people land in a world of hurt just jumping into a project and getting bit by lead or asbestos contamination. Not a good image, especially when park engines are city-owned or on city property. It can turn into a mess really quick.

No, that's the item. Of course asbestos is to be respected and the engine has been previously remediated, so that issue is not present.
