Dick Jensen's GTW 4-6-2, nearing the end at Blue Island, Illinois. http://abpr.railfan.net/abprphoto.cgi?s ... 98_240.jpg Privately owned, it was destroyed with public funds (METRA) when its owner didn't move it after being evicted from the old Rock Island engine facility, which was to be torn down for a new maintenance base for commuter trains. IRM and other organizations wanted to buy it, or at least offered a place to store it. In the end, of course, it was reduced to small pieces with a cutting torch and hauled away. Considering that other equipment still exists in similar precarious circumstances, how would we handle this case today? |
